Here is the scoop. I live in Maine where the weather gets cold for 6 months out of the year. I have a new home that was built in 2008 and is well insulated. I have radiant heat in the slab of my finished basement and also in the first floor living area. The house is a split level home. My boiler is a Noritz wall hung on demand propane boiler. I have completed my 1 year of service with my propane company and have the total amount of propane usage for the year and it is scary! I have used 1150 gallons in 12 months!! I have a locked in rate of 2.49/gallon so that equals $2863.50 in propane cost for the year! We are a family of 4 that live in a 2240 sf house. Can anyone out there tell me if this is at all normal or am I correct in feeling that I am using/spending way to much in propane for this house? I am strongly thinking of an alternative heat source so I can save money. Can anyone relate to this and if so what did you do or what do you recommend?
Thanks!Help me with heating question please!!!?
1150 gallons for a calender year isn't outrageous. Personally I'm not a fan of "on demand" units. While it is true that they don't use any fuel when there is no call for heat, they use a TON of fuel when they do operate!
One of the biggest issues I see with infloor heating is that the circulation piping gets installed too deep in the slab and you spend all your money heating the concrete rather than the room!
What size propane tank do you have? And are you planning on staying in this home for at least 5 years or so? If so, you might consider buying your own propane tank (if you are renting one) and get a 1000uswg tank. They are pretty big...3-1/2 foot diameter by 16 feet long so you need to have room to fit one. If you do this you will have a few good options that open up.
You can buy your fuel in the summer when prices are a lot lower and the tank will last you until the next summer. You can also "shop" the propane companies for the best price in your area without the hassle of changing tanks to change suppliers. They probably will require an inspection prior to delivery, but that shouldn't cost that much. A 1000uswg tank will probably run you about $3000 or so. Prices can vary considerably by region so you will have to explore the pricing in your area. I know that sounds like a lot of money, but after 3-5 years you should be back in the black.
Hope this helps!
