You are going to have to do alot of research to find anywhere that is even open in Maine in winter.

I just honeymooned there in September %26amp; things were already starting to go to "off season" hours. One really nice restaurant actually told us they close in November and don't reopen until April.

You can try bed %26amp; breakfasts, but you'll probably have to call around to determine if they are even open. www.bnbfinder.com

We actually rented a house on the coast overlooking the nubble lighthouse for the week we stayed there, it was GORGEOUS!! This is the real estate agent we dealt with for the rental %26amp; they do have some properties that are available in the winter for rentals:

  • Nissan 350z and I live in maine?

Im thinking about buying a 350z sometime in the future and I was wondering what would be a good mileage to buy it at.. I can't really buy a new one because I dont have that kind of money but I was thinking like 40-60k miles. I live in maine and the roads here aren't too good and so is the weather. My question is how long would my car last if I took good care of it and lets say bought it at 50k miles. How many miles would it last? 150-200k miles or less?Nissan 350z and I live in maine?
it'd probably last a while but your gonna have to replace some clutches if you get the manual which is the best choice by far. also you can always find a cheap truck for winter use so you can garage the other car.

    Lost Maine coon cat! Help!!?

Ok so yesterday I got this maine coon cat from a neighbor and well this morning before I went to school I let it out in my backyard so it could have excersize, but when I checked on it it was sitting on the fence!!!!! So I grabbed my jacket and went out but wasn't fast enough cause, well, it was gone!! I climbed the fence to see if it was in my neighbors backyard but it wasn't. So After school I told the owners and they said they will keep an eye out. And I asked every person out if they saw a cat (i discribed it and everything and everyone said no) I checked all my backyard and everything but no kitty!! I walked around the entire neighbor hood all the way from my house an the owners house! And every in between! I can't find her I lost her aroud 6:15am this morning! The previous owner talked to my parents and everything the owners are moving and are worried that the cat might not adjust to the weather cause she's partially an outdoor cat. Well, the owners told me to give her some time, they are very nice people. I really want her to cuddle up with me and to be safe!!! And she might starve! She only ate half a cup -before she ran away-.

So tomorrow at school I'm gonna print lost cat signs and everything and post them around the neighborhood!!! What could I do to make sure she comes? sHe's never been in my front yard only my backyard and the only way to get in is to jump the fence.

What should I do? She is a year and a half and had all er shots or atleast thats what the previous owners said. But she isn't wearing a collar, I'm scared that she got stolen, cause she is soooooo outgoing and friendly!

Help!!!!!!! Thanks! Please help me and I'm 12 and a girlLost Maine coon cat! Help!!?
Well you're doing the right thing. You can't help it if she gets stolen etc. Look under bushes decks and all over. I once found a cat under a neighbor's deck, (my cat sorry) in bushes that were tall and thick, and across the road in bushes again. All I have to say is don't have a cat outside without keeping your eyes on them at all times and possibly have a cat leash (they are SO hard to find!!!! The one I got doesn't even work that good really)

Hopefully the kitty comes back!! I'm so sorry.

    I myself have a mainecoon.

    Its really too bad. :(

Just keep the attitude up and advertise advertise advertise! Try try try and don't give up till you find her! If there's a humane society tell them about it and ask if you can post some papers there too.

    GOOD LUCK!!

I really hope you find her.Lost Maine coon cat! Help!!?
Check under your porches and any other hidey place the cat could be.Check abandoned buildings and houses. Definitely post "lost cat" signs. Was she microchipped? Ask you neighbors. Good luck. Hopefully she will turn up.

Once she does I would not let her out again. Personally I would not ever let her out because I believe there are too many dangers in the world to a cat and the negatives far outweigh the positives. However, If you feel she MUST go outside, wait a few days until she has bonded with you. She may have run away because suddenly her situation changed and she didn't understand why. If you do let her out make sure she is microchipped and has a collar..Lost Maine coon cat! Help!!?
This happened to me with my dog, of course ive had my dog about ten years now and she knows our home and location very well.we could not find her for days we made signs and as we were putting them up we saw a sign that said found lab and we checked it out and it was her!!!! All you can do is keep doing what your doing and ask people if theyve seen her. do you know if she had a chip in her fur? if so you can find her by going to the vet.But anyways im sure she couldnt have gone to far. Cats are smart animals.

I want to travel along the White Mountains in New England Going from north to south. Where should I begin?

My husband and I are interested in getting in the car and driving along the Applacion Trail this spring. We want to see the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We are currently in Maine. Where should we begin. Which town should I do a search for on mapquest as a starting point? How long should I wait? When will the weather be warm for traveling?I want to travel along the White Mountains in New England Going from north to south. Where should I begin?
Hello, I hope I can help with getting you started. I am also a New Englander and familiar with the White and Green Mountains.

Seeing you are in Maine, take I-91 south and watch for Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. That would be an excellent starting place and from there you can travel along the Majestic Range. It is very scenic only in Spring and Fall. I'm sorry, I don't remember the route that Mt. Washington is on, but there are numerous signs that give directions. You can see the mountain from many miles away on a clear day. It is only about an hour or so to the western part of the state where you can pick up the Green Mountain Range that goes into Vermont. Bring your camera and /or camcorder. At Mt. Washington is a train that goes to the summit. There is a weather observatory and a gift shop at the summit. If your car is in good enough condition, you can drive along the trail going to the summit as well. Near the base of the mountain is a beautiful motel. I can go on and on. Enjoy your trip.I want to travel along the White Mountains in New England Going from north to south. Where should I begin?
It will be a short trip. You really cannot follow the trail by car. Get a map instead of internet info. More reliable and you can pick your own route. Weather is about the same as in Maine right now.I want to travel along the White Mountains in New England Going from north to south. Where should I begin?
You do know that the AT is a footpath through the woods and as such cars are not allowed to use it. The notable exception to that is in Virgina where the trail parallels Skyline Drive.

To begin you will need to find US 2 The Maine stretch of Rt 2 basically goes from Bangor to Bethel

Should you want to find the AT in NH your best place to start will be in at the jct of US 2 and Rt16 in Gorham NH and head south

If you drive south on rt16 AT will be above you on both sides of the road until you reach Pinkham Notch

where it will cross 16 and then be on the right side of you .

The AT will then cross rt 302 on the southern end of the Presidential Range head into the woods going over to Franconia Notch and then wind it's way over to the beautiful town of Hanover NH

If you want the exact route of the AT

get in touch with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and buy the trail data book it will give you every road crossing on the AT

or your local backpacking store may have a copy.

Falmouth, Maine VS Miami,Florida? Please advise?

Hello everyone, i have job offers from two different companies.

One is in Falmouth, Maine and the other is in Miami, FL.

I need advice from all of you, which one should i choose.

    Points to note,

#1.i am married so no partying for me.

#2.weather? cant stand too cold. I ran away from Virginia.

#3. I want some place cheap, i wanna save money.I dont wanna pay $5000 rent for one bedroom apartment .

All you from Falmouth ME , how is life? slow?is it beautiful?

All you from Miami, FL...what do you guys say?

plz plz plz seriously help and advise , i need to make up my mind and tell my employers very soon. pay is almost the same.

any advice would be monumentally appreciated.Falmouth, Maine VS Miami,Florida? Please advise?
i live in portland maine--about 5 miles south of falmouth

    to answer your points:

#1--falmouth maine is MUCH more family friendly than miami-you dont have to party but portland is very lively--many restaurants, museams, art galleries and all that stuff

#2--weather is cold in winter but beautiful every other time (still beautiful in winter by the way)--its quite sunny even in winter

#3--rent/owning is way cheaper then miami BUT heating oil is through the roof right now (people are paying hundreds of dollars every month just to heat their homes)..in miami you pay for air conditioning

    other points:

---maines coast is as dramatic as it gets, falmouth is situated in southern maine (known for sandy beaches where as upper coast is the famous rugged coastline)..the islands that dot the shoreline just add to the scenery--floridas coast(and the rest of the state) is VERY monotonous to the point of being boring

---if safety is a factor, crime is practically non-existant in the portland-falmouth area, literally...there are NO ghettos, literally..that is not the case in miami

---life is "slow" but not boring...portland is known as a "small town with a big city feel'--the area is very lively but very relaxed--you'll feel like you're on vacation everyday( the states nickname is "Vacationland")---traffic and congestion are non-existant, the only time you might need to wait in traffic is when the bridge gets raised for boats to pass--thats not a bad thing...in falmouth you'll go to sleep at nigth to foghorns, you know what you'll go to sleep to in miami

--maines landscape is so diverse--look to the east there is the ocean, look to the west there are the mountins--camp in the fall and summer, ski/snowboard in the winter....

---is falmouth beautiful??? word cant describe it...

--i can go on and on about the many ways maine beats miami, the only way miami beats maine is that it is not cold but i couldnt handle the heat and humidity of miami anyway...just take up skiingFalmouth, Maine VS Miami,Florida? Please advise?
I have to agree with the other respondants. There is no comparison, and Falmouth wins hands down over Miami. That area of Maine is astonishingly beautiful, and the people are fantastic. In Miami you'll constantly be moving from frigid air conditioned buildings/homes/cars to muggy, hot, humid, polluted, crime-ridden outdoors and back again. And, since the cost of living is lower in Falmouth and the pay is the same, you'll be able to save enough to take a winter vacation in the Caribbean. So opt for Falmouth, buy a down jacket, down duvets for the beds, good mittens and learn to enjoy the winter!Falmouth, Maine VS Miami,Florida? Please advise?
There really is not too much to compare. 2 different areas completely opposite. Falmouth is way smaller then Miami and cold, different night life, it is not clustered with people like Miami, not much serious crime and it is colder then Va. in the winter. I personally would take the slower paced life in Maine because I am not a city person. If you are used to the fast paced city life then go to Miami because it surely isn't in Maine.

    Going to Boston/Maine...?

I used to live in Massachusetts, and my family and I go back every year for Christmas. We're going back in about a week, and the day after Christmas we're going to Maine. Since I'm from the east coast i'm used to the cold, but i do live in California now, so my winter weather clothing is a bit shabbier then usual... anyways we've overheard something or another about power outages and frigid weather, so i was just wondering if there was anything in particular i should be expecting? or anything extra i'll need to bring?

    thanks

ps we're staying on marth'as vineyard, so i don't know if that'll be more or less cold then mainland MAGoing to Boston/Maine...?
Well, Martha's Vineyard is almost always colder than the mainland. You're going to be getting coastal winds...but the advantage is, it doesn't snow as much, since it's on the ocean.

I would invest in some thermals for under your cool weather clothes. One or two sets will be good enough if you have access to a washing machine.

I'm bringing my fiance back to Boston this weekend, and he's from Arizona (and super skinny, heh), so this is what I'm doing for him.

Also, especially for your trek to Maine, make sure you have something warm and waterproof for your feet!! If you don't want to (or can't) invest in really warm winter shoes or boots, then wear wool socks over your regular socks.

I would definitely suggest sacrificing trendy shoes for comfort. :)

Also, head over to Target or a sporting goods store and pick up some hand %26amp; foot warmers. If you've never seen them, they're little packets that look like they're made out of interfacing, filled with what looks like herbs. There are chemicals in there that, when activated by opening the outer packet, create heat that lasts for hours. Put these in your pockets or gloves, and even in your shoes, and it will keep you toasty! They really do work, and aren't expensive at all. (I think I saw a pack at Target with about 10 for $6)

Best of luck! Have fun, and keep warm!Going to Boston/Maine...?
Prepare for wind. There will be less snow on the Vineyard than mainland (its the coastal effect) but it will be windier which will make it feel colder.Going to Boston/Maine...?
Are you going to Maine or going to Martha's Vineyard???

Martha's Vineyard is part of Massachusetts!!!!!!!!!!

(And, yes, the islands are unusally warmer in winter than the mainland. But I bet you already knew that).
Hot Damn! is a cinnamon liqueurr which i like to use in aadjustingg to winter in New England GGOOD LUCK bRR bRRR Merry Christmas.

  • Sights around Kennebunkport Maine?

I'm going to Kennebunkport Maine for an upcoming weekend. I'm wondering about places to see, nice shops, maybe lighthouses? Also, nice restaurants and just fun Maine-ish things to do! It's going to be in early October, so warm weather things will not be good. Also, it could be in the Kennebunkport area not just that specific town and I'd like to know a nice park or somewhere to have a picnic. In addition, we might be spending a day in Portland, so what can we do there also. Btw its my boyfriend and I ages 21 and 24. Thanks!!Sights around Kennebunkport Maine?
Cape Elizabeth Light House is really nice and a romantic spot for a picnic lunch.

Congdon's in Wells, Maine, has the best donuts on earth. Must go. So worth the calories.

For a romantic dinner and excellent food, go to Mia's at Pepperell Square, in Saco, Maine.

If you're into kitchy overdone hyper-touristy boardwalks, then visit Old Orchard Beach in the evening.

York, Maine, has a cool rocky beach, great for watching the tide and enjoying the sun. York also has some cool old colonial buildings you can tour, including an old jail from several hundred years ago.

Bath, Maine, is a cute small town to walk around, have coffee, window shop, and sit along the river.

The headquarters of LLBean is in Freeport, but it's overrated.

If you have time, a trip to the interior for white water rafting is a must. Northern Outdoors is hands down the best place, in The Forks, Maine. They even have their own brewery on site.

    Enjoy!Sights around Kennebunkport Maine?

it is open lighthouse day on saturday the 18th. 3 in the portland area will be open. we did 2 of them last year. all have park areas where you can do a picnic.

the old port area of downtown portland will have plenty of things to do.Sights around Kennebunkport Maine?
Kport is pretty small, quaint New Englandish sea port. Historically, it was a ship building center. Between Kport and Kennebunk off Rt35 is the Landing School - which teaches the art of wooden boat building. If you ever wanted to be a boat builder - that is THE school to go to. So, your history lesson.

You can pretty much walk to everything from Dock Square in Kport. Dock Square is the middle of the Kport village, where the obelisk is.

Coming soon to the Travel Channel show food wars will be a be a lobster roll contest. The contestants are the Clam Shack (on the bridge in Kport) and Allison's restaurant in Dock Square. So, you may want to try a lobster roll at both? I know who won - I watched them film it.

Best place to get drink in Kport used to be the Arundal Warf, but I don't know if that is still the case?

White Barn Inn is a AAA 5 star restaurant, very pricey - but excellent. The other high end restaurant in the area is Arrows in Ogunquit. Between the two, I'd recommend Arrows, but you can't go wrong with either one.

The diners drive-ins and dives show on food network recently did an episode at the Maine Diner, which is in Wells, ME. To get there from Kport - go south on rt9 (main drag through the village - Clam Shack is on Rt9) until you get the US Rt1. At Rt1 take a left, Maine Diner is about 100 yards down the road on your left. Best thing at the Maine Diner is the "seafood" chowder. They make good onion rings too.

There are lots of other restaurants in Kport, there is a brewpub (Shipyard).

For sights, there is Walkers Point, which is the Bush (as in President Bush) family summer residence. If you go past that, just keep going until you get Wildes District Road(at the fire house), then take a right. You will eventually get to a town called Cape Porpoise. Find your way out to the harbor - there is a picturesque light house there. Back on Rt9, keep going "north east" towards Biddeford Pool. There is a nature walk/sanctuary thingy @ Biddeford Pool, which if you walk out to the end you can see the Wood Island Light house. Both of these light houses are very close to Kport. If you could get a boat ride to Wood Island you can walk out to the light house itself.

If you drive up to Portland, there is the famous Portland Head Light, which is actually in South Portland or Cape Elizabeth? There is also twin lights in Cape Elizabeth, you can drive up to those, as you can with Portland Head Light.

Which city in Maine is better to live in? (Options Included)?

Hey hey hey! I'm creating a new story and I can't decide which city in Maine to choose. I've picked two. Sorry if any of this is spelled incorrectly because I am typing this on an iPad. Here are the two cities I have chosen:

    Addison, Maine

    Burlington, Maine

Which one should I do? In my story, I am going to have the main character complain about the weather always being really cold. Thanks in further advance!

~Aubrey (I can't do my signature heart on the iPad)

    "I'm a cube fist man!" ~Cat Valentine/ Ariana Grande

Sorry! I'm only 11!Which city in Maine is better to live in? (Options Included)?
Well, there really isn't much difference in the weather of either of two towns. Maine in general has pretty cool weather. The real difference between the two is that Addison is on the coast, and Burlington is farther north, which means that Burlington would have a bit more snow in the winter, and the snow would probably last longer. I don't think it will matter which town you choose, because most people don't know much about Maine at all.

Possibly moving to Maine, what do we need to know?

DH and I are thinking about moving to Maine late next spring (April or May). My husband has been blessed with a great job where we can live anywhere and they'll fly him in to work. We chose Maine because it seems like a beautiful state (haven't been before, plan on visiting in Nov.) and we are hoping to buy a fair amount of land to garden and have a few barn animals (like chickens, for starters). We have never done any farming before, so we know we have a lot to learn. But it has always been my husband's dream to farm and he's had pretty great vegetables gardens the past two years, so hopefully with more land and space it'll be nice and a great way to raise our child(ren). We want to get out of the city before they start school.

We've lived in the South all of our lives (Louisiana and now Texas) so we obviously know the cold will be an adjustment, but anything will be better than the 110 degree weather we are having in Texas right now! We look forward to having actual WHITE Christmases, picking apples, hopefully having a small orchard, hunting, farming, the outdoors and raising our child(ren) away from the city.

Now that I've shared our dreams, let us in on reality. What do we need to know and what should we consider about moving to Maine?

Thanks in advance!Possibly moving to Maine, what do we need to know?
The greater Portland area is very nice, lots to offer re employment and general living. The better, larger schools are in that area. Falmouth is pricey by Maine standard but probably affordable by out-of-state comparisons. Windham is a nice area as well, but there is lots of summer traffic to fight on secondary roadways due to number of lakes in the area. Portland has the airport, Bangor has an airport as well. Other than those two you will travel to fly any where. Portland has wonderful museums and restaurants and the SeaDogs are the Red Sox's up and comers! The University of Southern Maine and UNE, the only medical school I am aware of in Maine. Bowdoin College is about 25 minutes from Portland, Colby College about l.5 hours and Bates, just 25 minutes as well. Maine is a great place to raise children! Good luck!Possibly moving to Maine, what do we need to know?
Stephen King lives there ! Say hi for me !Possibly moving to Maine, what do we need to know?
Although Maine is a nice place to visit, I personally would not recommend living there full-time. People in the New England region are not known for being overly friendly and warm; we are a cold people. I don't want to squash your hopes and dreams, but definitely come visit before you decide to move permanently; it's a different lifestyle from Texas. I've lived in New Hampshire for all of my life, so the advice I'm giving you is pretty much as real as it can get.

If you do decide to move to this area, prepare yourself for for cold winters and brutal summers. One day, it will be 65 and sunny, and the next it will be 30 and snowing; winters vary greatly.

    Hope my advice helps!
Maine is a very varied state. The one thing will be to watch out for moose at sunrise and sunset, as they often find themselves on the road and at these two times of day they can be hard to see.

If you live near the coast, you can expect nor'easters on a regular schedule. If you live north and inland, you can expect it to be extremely cold in winter, with temperatures below 0 nightly for most of January and February. It also does get into the 90s in summer, but the water never really warms up for swimming.

Any one from the state of maine ?

ok i live in mass and im going away on vacation to maine and im passing throe NH i was wondering how much a 30 pack cost in main so i know weather to buy it in NH and save me some money Any one from the state of maine ?
i live in portland , maine...beer is thru the roof here, a 12 pack of miller lite (the worst beer there is) costs $9.99 at hannafords...so yes, get your 30 pack elsewhere

Moving from Maine to South Carolina for college...good idea, or not?

Im a junior in high school this year. So next summer im planning on moving south for college and probably for the rest of my life. Iv lived in maine my whole life so far and im sick of the winters and cold weather. Im probably going to be moving by myself, which is kind of scary but im looking to find someone from SC/NC that moved there for college from any of the nothern stated maybe for some insite about what its like and how different my life will be. But even if your from SC any insite about the state would be helpful, i want to feel like im making a good choice by moving far from maine.Moving from Maine to South Carolina for college...good idea, or not?
haha alright i've been going to maine every summer since i was born and i live in maryland...all i have to say is that you better be prepared for the heat and humidity cause summer days in maine are like a warm spring day down this wayMoving from Maine to South Carolina for college...good idea, or not?
i have never been to maine or south carolina; however, you are making a good choice if you want to experience that. you can always transfer to a school up north if you don't like south after one semester. i say go for it.Moving from Maine to South Carolina for college...good idea, or not?
Hey, I did that a few years ago! SC is nice and warm, it hardly ever snows, it's green all year, and it has nice beaches. NC gets a little colder. Sometimes I miss the snow in Maine, but only from the inside of a warm house. Not while driving, that's for sure.

However, get ready for a bit of culture shock. It's very religious down here, and they haven't repealed all the blue laws (Maine did years ago). And everything is deep fried. And everything moves very slowly. But hey, it's nice and warm, so you can easily put up with that.

I don't know if you're going for public or private, but look into Clemson University, Furman, Woffard, and UNC Chapel Hill.

  • Does this weather condition make sense?

    Intro:

Francesca: As of this morning in Maine, there will be a cold front heading in from northern Canada which is part of the continental polar air mass. This will lower the temperature of the land it passes as it moves. We might see an increase in cumulonimbus clouds producing heavy precipitation later on around noon today, and possibly a thunderstorm as well. But further into this week you can say bye to the cold weather, due to a warm front heading our way. This is going to increase the relative humididty of the air, and raise the Dew Point

Francesca: The weather conditions around the United States are becoming quite severe. In southern texas, sitings have been shown that a tornado is sweeping through Dallas and destroying everything in its path! East of Texas, weather officals have spotted a near by hurricane making its way to the coast of Florida.

Cassaundra: There is a high pressure system over canada and parts of norhtern maine, causing strong winds in the low pressure system over new york. With the station's barometers reading 1012 for maine and 1001for new york, the isobars on this map give you an idea of were the low and high pressure systems are. The low pressure over new york has caused the majority of the state to be covered in a layer of stratus clouds. The opposite is ture about canada and maine; the effect of the high pressure has caused only a few cirrus clouds to cover the sky.

Cassaundra: The jet stream, which is currently over the northern United states, is predicted to shift south within the coming days.

Are there any problems with this? Thanks!!Does this weather condition make sense?
I will only look at the general science accuracy of this script and nothing else.

Paragraph one: No meteorological errors found.

Paragraph two: What are "sitings"? Do you mean "observations"???

Paragraph three: In the first sentence, "high pressure system" should be changed to "surface high pressure" and "causing strong winds in the low pressure system" to "causing strong winds near the low pressure system".

Paragraph four: No meteorological errors found.

Other than what I had noted, the science (weather conditions) in rest of the written script looks to be correct.

Again, I did not make any other corrections to this script like in grammar, spelling, or other errors that were not science related. Those errors, you will need to find and correct.

yes...if you get what everyone else has been getting you can expect delays.
Hard to say. That area is likely prepared for winter weather since it is common. There was 5 inches of snow here this morning, but no school closures or delays since we can better deal with this as opposed to areas in the south or southeast, where snow and ice are relatively rare.Based on the following weather report do you think there could be a delay or a closing of schools tomorrow?
I live up in the mountains of Colorado. It has been snowing non stop since Sunday. We have 4 feet of snow and schools were closed today. It's possible your schools might have delays tomorrow.
Most likely a closing if temperature are expected to remain below freezing. It's the freezing rain that does it.

Do you think that Maine would be an alright place to own horses? Please answer, 10 points easy!?

Any rude, or disrespectful answers will be reported. Please do not answer if you don't intend to answer politely. Thanks!

Anyways, I love Maine and I've been going there all my life. I have family who lives up there, and its absolutely beautiful. There are also a lot of farms up there, depending on the areas. So, do you think that (southern) Maine would be a good place to own horses in?

Heres a short pros and cons list:

    Pros:

    Inexpensive acreage prices

    Extensive wildlife

    L.L. Bean (Thats a family favorite : D )

    Beautiful

    Environmentally conscious

Plenty of trails and woods to ride in!

Plus, a lot of farms have barns attached to the houses so if there was a heavy snow, we'd still have access to the barn

    I enjoy winter!

Most of my favorite breeds are pretty weather tolerant/resistant so weather wouldn't be as huge a factor as many people think

    Cons:

Typical New England Winters, which I'm used to...

It can get so cold! (At least I like the wintertime...)

Some places can get icy, although southern Maine winters are not as bad as northern Maine winters

Do you think that Maine would be an alright place to own horses? Please answer, 10 points easy!?
I think it would be a great place to earn horses. You forgot two things though: lobsters and blueberries! Ha ha, but seriously, Maine is very pretty and serene and wild. It would be a wonderful place to own horses so long as you had an indoor arena so you could ride year round and not have to worry about the weather. The barns are attached to the houses? That is so cool!
I can not speak from personal experiance, however I do have a friend that lived up there for many years and had a horse farm. She loved it! She said the spring and fall rides really all made it worth it. The hardest part for her was makeing sure that the horses had enough heat in the stables so check in on that before purchasing. Although there are not too many jobs up there, from what I have heard Maine is a wonderfull place to keep horses! Good Luck!Do you think that Maine would be an alright place to own horses? Please answer, 10 points easy!?
i think it would be alright

you sound like you really love horses and know a lot about them

so if you take good care of them and whatnot i think its a great idea.

ive never been to maine or anywhere up northeast, i live in kansas, but i say go for it.
I think that, if you really want to, anywhere can be a good place to own a horse. As long as you provide everything the horse needs, it can thrive in any setting, even a city. From what I know, Maine is a pretty cold climate with harsh winters, but is very beautiful. As long as the horse is well cared for, has shelter that is warm in the winter and cool enough in the summer, it should be fine in Maine. You said that there were woods and trails to ride on, and that is perfect because that means there are plenty of ways to keep your horse fit, healthy, and happy.

You seem like you love horses and know enough about them, and I'm pretty confident that you could take care of your horse well in Maine, or anywhere else for that matter.

Good luck, and happy riding!Do you think that Maine would be an alright place to own horses? Please answer, 10 points easy!?
Sounds like a dream to me. I love winter too. Looks like the pros far outweigh the cons, and if I could, I think I just might go with you! LOL Seriously, it sounds just lovely, and if it is where you want to ive, and nothing is holding you back, go for it. If you don't, years down the road, you may regret that you didn't go when you had the chance. Never give up on a dream that is within your reach. Best of luck to you in your dream.

Of course. I am sure there are thousands of people in Maine who own horses.
yea i think maine would be a good place to raise a horse as long as theres enough space. i wish massachusetts was because i want one
Well you have more pros then cons. And all your cons are to do with the weather. I live in Minnesota. And we have harsh winters here.

It gets cold - the horses grow winter coats, they have shelters, have access to round bales during the winter, and if needed they wear winter blankets.

It gets icy - everyone at the barn chips in to buy salt that melts the ice, we have an indoor arena and grooming areas, etc. and we all help to put markers where it is very icy to minimize the risk of a horse or person slipping and/or falling.

So winters aren't as bad as many people expect they are. Just dress in layers and invest in nice winter boots. ;D
i would i have never been to maine but i live in ny
    Yess.

    Gorgeous montains.

Live in the right spot riding on the beach!

    The weather.... question...?

I am currently near Topsham, Maine and I heard it's supposed to start snowing really hard at any given time, is this true? I need to know weather or not to expect school cancelations. We're supposed to get over foot of snow starting sometime this morning [it is currently 4:20 a.m. here] and it hasn't started yet *looks out window*

So I'm just making sure.. it IS supposed to snow, right?

    ThanksThe weather.... question...?
Yes. I'm looking at what you're getting as we speak...

    http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php鈥?/a>The weather.... question...?
Yes it is supposed to snow, and you are going to be getting a lot of it as well. If you don't feel comfortable going to school you shouldn't.

I need a cold weather car?

Live in Maine, need a good car. A sedan. Needs all wheel drive, and should be sturdy. Not afraid to pay a lot of money, im willing to pay for a good car. Something w/ great gas milage, maybe a hybrid?I need a cold weather car?
Personally I like hybrids but it doesn't have the same kick as regular cars. I would go for a 2012 Toyota Camry. Its very durable, (had mine for 10 years) good on gas, great in the winter time and they are really fixing a lot of the problems. I just talked to a sale rep and he stated that all the problems were fixed. Its just my opinion of course but also you can check out Hyundai also. Best luck in finding your car!!

  • Can Black Mouth Curs live outside during the winter?

I live in Maine where it can get very cold at times during the winter and I was wondering if Black mouth curs can live outside in the colder weather of winter and be alright. Can Black Mouth Curs live outside during the winter?
Not ideally. Unless it has a heated dog house and de-icing water bowl, and even then, Maine winters are very cold with very dense snow. If you keep the fenced yard or area where it's living on the farm free of snow (shoveling multiple times daily), combined with the heated home, it may be okay. But, a dog lives best indoors, and out for limited duration to exercise and potty.

Perhaps a Bernese MD, arctic breed, Great Pyr, or Newfie, for examples, would be fine throughout the day and night multiple days (other than snow/iceballs on clumping hair, esp feet)...but it is very difficult to gauge how outdoor dogs' health is faring. You can miss diarrhea, vomit, parasites, abnormal urine, bite wounds, etc for too long before it's noticed and you get the dog treatment. Dogs that live in close quarters with people are better socialized too.

They often compete with stray critters and wildlife for their food and living space too.

Is it me or does the new NHL suck and does the future changes suck?

I am getting sick of all the rules and penalties. This obstruction bullcrap they keep calling is rediculous. I hear they want to make the nets higher the posts angle out 6 inches and make the goalie pads smaller. I am so sick of a ex-basketball commissioner running the NHL why not make Don Cherry the commissioner. I may start actually enjoy watching hockery again. I am also tired of the amount of teams there are and the lack of super stars per team. Time to get rid of ten teams, make the one less division and put more stars on each team. Florida doesn't need two teams they don't even need one team. They wonder why attendance is done. Quit putting teams in warm weather climits where hockey is somewhat not heard of, how about moving a couple teams north say one to maine and few more to Canada. Is it me or does the new NHL suck and does the future changes suck?
It must be you. Accept it, you suck.

    _
sometimes change is good, i think cherry would make an excellent commisioner, i don't need higher scoring games to watch hockey, bettemen is a complete idiot. i'm sorry that canada doesn't have more teams for you, but thanks to quebec for the avalancheIs it me or does the new NHL suck and does the future changes suck?
Sounds like someone woke up on the wrong side of their Molson's this morning.
First of all, attendance has been going up since the new rule changes. Now Ive been a hockey fan my whole life, I have always loved the sport, and will always love the sport. The new penatly rules have slowed down the game a bit but the touch-up offsides and waving off of icing makes up for it. I am all for moving more teams up north and getting rid of the ones in Cali, Florida, and Texas. Although I understand that they are trying to reach new audiences and spread the wonderful game to all those southern hicks but they are too stupified with their NASCAR and lynchings that they dont know a great game when they see one. As far as your initial question, it is just you. Hockey is hockey and it is awesome. Is it me or does the new NHL suck and does the future changes suck?
It's you. There will always be something to complain about and I think Bettman is a weasel but I have been loving this season.

Attendance is up in most arenas too. They need to get better coverage in the states and I would love to see teams in Winnipeg, etc. Don't like the south, feel they don't have the heart for hockey but....

But I love the shoot out and many of the adjustments and while I wasn't for any changes initially, I love this game now.
Dude, hockey is hockey. Just enjoy it. They should allow for a little more physical play though.
When sports finally realize that the commissioner should be doing what they are doing for the good of the sport and not just the owners we'll finally see decent leaders of ALL pro leagues. Buttman is killing the game we love here in Canada. If you can't skate, you can't be the commish. There should be full equipment tryouts.
It's just you. There are some dumb ideas, out there, but one of them is shrinking the NHL. So is expanding the nets. The size of the NHL is good, I would move some teams, but mainly stuff like Florida (they have TB, That's enough) And I would never get rid of any teams, and I would not allow any Cup winning teams to move. I think that the heritage there is important.

superstars? I'm glad there aren't stars on all teams. Often, it's a one man show. Watching a team is so much more interesting, and the team wins a lot too. A superstar is no good if there is no team there- Look at Gretzky anywhere but the oilers. Hockey is a team sport- if you don't like that, watch NASCAR.

And attendance has been going up. I'm guessing you haven't been part of that. It's still fun to go to a game.
yes, i mean come on! in the past there there were probably one fight per game of every game on every night, and if u were lucky, there would be a big brawl

u hear an expression like "this is just like old time hockey" maybe once in a month and i gota tell u the truth... i miss old time hockey!
I think it's you. Except for the wimpy obstruction calls and a crappy commish, overall I think Hockey is better than ever. I, for one, have enjoyed the effect the European players have had in improving the skill level of the game. I grew up watching Hockey in the 60's and 70's and every 5 mins a fight would break out and slow the game down, what a waste. I always hated it.

You're probably right about some of the placement of teams in the wrong markets, but why would we want to try to put more teams in Canada? You guys couldn't even keep the ones you had. For a country who's people are supposed to be weaned on Hockey, I would be embarrassed by the lack of support the fans have given over the years.

As far as changes go, the only thing I would like to see is a standardization of the rink size to the dimensions they use in Europe in order to open up the ice more.
    Its you!!
i agree, someone put a stick through bettmans ears and drop him in the lake. Don Cherry would be the greatest commissioner in all of the history of sports. not just hockey. His attitutde is exactly what hockey needs... NO BS! straight shooting and honest. Cherry is the MAN!

I live in Phoenix and would like to keep the coyotes, even though Gretzky is an awful coach and the team sucks, and they give away great talent like Mike Comrie for a bag of pucks in trades. It still brings REAL hockey teams to my neighborhood where i can go. And i do go to a lot of games each year. I would love to cheer for the coyotes but they need to make a lot of other changes not that they finally changed those horrible unis.
it's you mellow out and enjoy the game
    No. You suck.
    props do ya

    .::Maine::.?

I {eventually} want to move to Maine, but would like to know some information on it first. The biggest thing I want to know is how the temperature is up there, I am from Florida and want to get back into some cold weather again! What is the average temperature for Winter, Spring, Summer %26amp; Fall? Also, how often does it snow in the winter time?, how long does it last? etc.

    Thanks! =).::Maine::.?
Its really not that bad and actually quite comfortable in the summer. You will especially enjoy the nights when the temperature drops to very comfortable levels for sleeping. Having an air conditioner is nice to have typically between July and August although you can usually get by without one.

Coastal areas will experience cooler summers and warmer winters (although sometimes this can result in an icy mix of percipitation while inland areas enjoy more snow). Coastal areas will also have slightly more wind.

Summers are generally hot, often with periods at the hight of summer where the temperature will be in the mid 80s. Extreme temperatures of 92-95 will occur once or twice in the summer.

Recent winters have been much warmer than usual with less snow as well.

Go ahead give me any information about these states or if you only know of one than give me the information on that state.

Last question which state do you consider to be the best one and why?

It's for a project at school. Thank you.Maine,New York,Massachusetts,Pennsylvani鈥?Which do you prefer?
The only natural disasters in the north east are: Nor'easters (storms that come up the coast and drop lots of rain or snow). There was just one such storm last week. Google Warwick, RI, they got clobbered, but all of New England was hit hard. By clobbered I mean flooding. Had it been colder there would have been 30+ inches of snow.

The number 1 industry in Massachusetts is higher education(i.e. Universities). As a result there a highly educated population.

I live in NH, work in Massachusetts. I can be in Times Square in 4 hours from my house in NH. Of your four, I prefer Maine, although I love NY city. PA, at least the parts I've seen are mostly farm land or mining.Maine,New York,Massachusetts,Pennsylvani鈥?Which do you prefer?
    Maine:

Can get bad ice-storms and snow storms in the winter...the worst that I remember was 1998.

Crime is relatively low...it would be safe, in my opinion, to say that. Most people are extremely friendly...(however there are those "select" few that each state has that are snobby and judgemental). The weather in the winter: usually cold and snow. Spring: mild. Fall: cool, rain...beautiful foliage. Summer: gorgeous, warm, sunny, amazing!

If i purchase a wrangler with a soft top will it withstand snowfall?

now my choices for a wrangler are mostly soft tops in my price range. i live in maine where we have snow and alot sometime, we have no garage and so it will have to live in the weather. will the fabric in the softop withstand the weight of the snow or should i hold out for a hard top?If i purchase a wrangler with a soft top will it withstand snowfall?
A soft top will handle the snow.I have a jeep and we had 22 inches of snow a few years ago and it held up very well.
If the top is in good condition, it should hold up. The life of a soft top can be very short, though. If it were me, I'd get the hard top. You can take it off in the summer and get a Bikini top for it.If i purchase a wrangler with a soft top will it withstand snowfall?
Yes,I have had a foot of snow on mine with no problem. If your still worried about it you can buy a Top Prop from Quadratec.com.
I had up to 2 feet of heavy snow on my soft top during various storms this past winter, with no issues. I've seen soft-top Jeeps buried under a lot more snow than that, without any damage to the soft tops. So I believe the construction of the soft top is more than adequate to withstand snow loading.

If you are buying it new, the warranty will cover any damage that might occur. But again, I don't expect any damage due to snow.

One thing to be careful of is the plastic windows. Do not try to scrape them if they are icy, or they will become scratched. I simply use the side mirrors during snowy weather.

Also, do not try to roll the plastic windows up or down in severely cold weather, or the plastic can crack. Best thing is to make sure the top is up before bad weather comes in, and just leave the top alone for the winter months.

Congrats on your decision to buy a Jeep. They are great-fun vehicles! If i purchase a wrangler with a soft top will it withstand snowfall?
Soft tops are a lot stronger than they look.
well if i were you i would definately hold out for the hard top, soft tops can withstand somewhat of a snowfall but not too much remember it is just canvas. you could get the soft top and go to a junk yard and just get a hard top. you can take off the soft top and replace it with a hard top if you want. good luck. :)
Take the top off and pull the drain plugs.
i would get the hard top if u say it snows alot. the soft top will hold it but not very much before it stretches and all that stuff. the hard top is alot better for the cold to because they have defrosters also
yes it can.It can take alot,You can allways pick-up a hard top.I have had both. The hard top get's to be a ***** when it startes to rain and you can't get it back on before you get wet.If you get a hard top you might never take the top off.
I've had both. I lived in Chicago and Indiana. Lots of snow there. I prefered the soft top. Way more fun! The hard top is a pain in the butt to remove and can't be done with just one person unless it's in the garage with a hoist, but even then there'll be some wrenching to be done. With the soft top you take it with you wherever you go. I also think that the soft top looks more "Jeepy". No problem with warmth in the softy. Jeep heaters kick butt! The only down side to the soft top is road noise. But for me, it never really was a problem.....just part of the charm of Jeep ownership. Good Luck, have fun! Rob

My family and I are seriously considering moving to Maine in the next year. We need to make a fresh start and I have always loved Maine. We are thinking the Bangor or Belfast area, but are unsure. Could you please tell me about the area you live in, the weather, and how you like it there? I am a nurse, so I am looking for work in a hospital and such. Thanks for your help!Anyone living in Maine? Please respond!?
Maine is beautiful if you like the 4 seasons. Fall is very beautiful but winter can be long and cold. The Bangor area is very nice, I would consider moving to a smaller town near Bangor due to taxes and Housing costs. Belfast is near the coast which makes it a tourist destination in the summer and you will have to deal with cold breezes off the ocean in the winter. It is also very expensive. We are living near Skowhegan, used to live near Bangor, too. Hospitals to consider would be Eastern Maine Medical Center which is always looking for nurses but there are more hospitals in the area, such as Waterville. Good luck.
I live in Rockland, and its a great place to live, and constantly growing. Its beautiful here, and couldnt really imagine living anywhere else.

I grew up in Maine and currently live in NH but still own property there so visit regularly. Maine is a good state to move to, slower paced than most with both mountains and ocean. If things are the same the pay scale is lower but the cost of living is also lower. I grew up in the Bath area and enjoy all Maine has to offer. The Bath area has Popham Beach, Bowdoin College (Brunswick), the Bath Ship Yard, Marine Museum and is just a nice city. Portland is about 35 miles away and has more shopping and an active water front now. There are hospitals in Brunswick and Portland. Good luck on your move.

Any other tidbits of info to make my trip great?First timer skiing at Sunday River in Maine. Any advice?
Wear several thin layers of clothing except on your feet, one pair of ski socks and your foot are all that should be in the boot. Your boots should fit TIGHT around your foot and ankle.

Keep well hydrated, drink water, ice your muscles right after skiing to lessen cramping or soreness.

Listen to the advice of your instructor, they will know the area and your skill level.

As to conditioning, start now with a jump rope about 15 minutes a day, swim, any activity to increase your conditioning, Ice your muscles right after skiing for 20 minutes, then go dancing, hot tub and sauna. Enjoy yourself.First timer skiing at Sunday River in Maine. Any advice?

Are schools in the cold, snowy, Northern U.S. closed frequently due to snow/icy weather conditions?

I live in Maryland, and the schools here close when there is like a drop of snow. One timne the schools closed simply because snow was predicted, and it never came! This is ridiculous. My question: How do the schools in the cold, snowy states, like Maine, Washington, and Colorado handle snow storms? If they are like Maryland, they would be closed just about everyday in the winter!!!Are schools in the cold, snowy, Northern U.S. closed frequently due to snow/icy weather conditions?
Actually, here in the states where we really DO get tons of snow the schools almost NEVER close! UT, WY, ID %26amp; MT, forget it. We have school everyday no matter what. I should know, I teach at a high school. One morning during a snow storm it took me 2 hours to get to work, (usually a 35 min. drive) but they didn't close school even for that blizzard!

Last week the principal came on the intercom numerous times to warn about the freezing rain we were having and to drive carefully on the way home. Sport games were canceled and the roads were sheets of ice the next morning. There were over 250 slid offs and accidents on the freeways in Northern UT. But did they close school? NO!

So - point being, here where we get real snow we just plow through it. I can't get over NV where they had a freak snow storm that dropped a fraction of an ice and they had to close the airport as well as the schools. They don't have snow removal equipment so the airport had to wait for the snow to melt before planes could take off! LOLOLAre schools in the cold, snowy, Northern U.S. closed frequently due to snow/icy weather conditions?
yes and so are shops, banks etc.Are schools in the cold, snowy, Northern U.S. closed frequently due to snow/icy weather conditions?
    I live in Portland Oregon.

They closed the schools hella long during christmastime. We had 2-3 inches of snow fall starting in the morning yesterday. Oddly enough they didnt close schools. I think because the temp got up to 40 and they knew it would melt.

Let's see what Roy Spencer's data has to say about the current *global* temperatures.

Hmm should I believe Spencer's data, or your local weather? Tough call.

Oh wait I forgot, since these aren't "direct" measurements, they don't count.
Currently 64 degrees and 84% humidity in Long Beach California. Southern California is still experiencing the coolest summer since the early 50s. Some day time highs have not been this low since WWI.
Global Warming is great. Warm weather is a lot better than cold weather.

    Thinking of visiting Portland, Maine.?

My daughter and I would like to visit the east coast. (We are from Seattle). We found a cheap fare to Portland Maine. Can anyone tell me what the city is like (is Portland and South Portland totally separate). What is the weather like, (in Sept. or October) What is there to do, etc. Would appreciate hearing from locals.Thinking of visiting Portland, Maine.?
    Welcome to the East Coast!!!

Unfort. I'm not in Maine....however I have tons of family that live there... I'm in CT not too far! :)

Portland, Maine is a lovely small city. Lots of shopping and restaurants. From my understanding South Portland is the just the South part of the city of Portland. That's all. There's a big mall there and it's the major hub for most people in Southern Maine to go shopping etc

Other great places are FREEPORT and KITTERY great shopping and great sites! :)

If you want go about 1 hour north to Kennebunk, ME

It's the home of the G. W. Bush summer compound.

It's a great small town, Dock SQ and Federal Jack's restaurant. I love the town, I have family there!

    AMAZING COASTLINE

About 3 - 4 hours north up the coastline is Boothbay Harbor, ME....another quaint town! AMAZING! My Aunt used to own a hotel there until last year when her husband passed and they sold it. However Tug Boat, Fisherman's Wharf, Brown Brother's and Spruce Point Inn are all very nice! :)

Bar Harbor is just north as well

IN Sept, Oct you will def. need at least a light sweater, bring a sweatshirt and windbreaker. Esp. if your walking on the ocean. Long Pants is a must, but bring some shorts too. The temp should be around anywhere from 40 - 60. Chiller nights! Doubtful that you'll be swimming in the ocean!

Please email me with any ?'s you might have I can try to find more info for you. Have a safe flight and a wonderful trip!

Why does the same water temp. feel cold in one climate and warm in another?

I have a friend that lives in Maine, and when he swims in his pool with the water at 70 degrees and the weather outside is 80, he doesn't get cold. However, when he's visiting me in AZ, and swims in my pool at the same temperatures (70 deg. water, 80 deg. air), he feels cold and wants to get out. What is the scientific explanation for this boggling phenomenon? Why does the same water temp. feel cold in one climate and warm in another?
I live in Maine and what you've described doesn't make the least bit of rational sense. If anything, it might possibly be the other way around, though even that still doesn't make a lot of sense. My apartment just reached 80 degrees here and I turned on the A/C because it was so hot.

Either his body thermostat is way out of whack-which I doubt-or else he's just pulling your leg.

I think it's just a stunt he uses to get attention.

What area is referred to as the "I-95 corridor"?

I-95 stretches from Florida to Maine. I always hear about the "I-95 corridor" in reference to severe weather, but it must mean something more specific than "the entire eastern seaboard of the US". To which states does this label refer to?

Thanks. What area is referred to as the "I-95 corridor"?
"The I-95 Corridor" actually does, technically, refer to the entire length of Interstate 95 and its environs. It's used locally to refer to relevant sections, so someone in Maine is probably not going to be talking about Florida when they say "the I-95 corridor" and vice versa. If you are hearing it on the Weather Channel or something else national, it usually refers to the Mid-Atlantic portion of the coast, possibly because the chunk from northern Virginia through New Jersey is filled with people unaccustomed to severe weather, as well as subject to a proportionally large amount of congestion.

How's the weather where you are?

Only in Maine would I get cold during summer, haha. How's the weather where you are?

  • Which of these four places would you rather live for a semester?

Portland Maine, Hilo Hawaii (the big island), Flagstaff Arizona, or Anchorage Alaska. It will be for the spring semester (think about weather lol). Which would be your first second and third choose and why? Can anyone tell me something about these towns?Which of these four places would you rather live for a semester?
definitely think about the weather. Obviously there is a huge difference between hawaii and arizona, with maine and alaska.

I only know of portland, maine. it's an absolutely adorable city. it's very bohemian. tons of cute little shops and restaurants. it's right on the ocean. and there'll definitely be a lot to do there.

Caribou maine? what's it like in Maine?

I am going to Caribou Maine for job corps. I understand that its a small town compared to the one I grew up in. What's it like there. What is the weather like? I'm going to get there in April. When does "winter" like, is there any summer there? I only expect to be there until June or July then I'm going to a different job corps.Caribou maine? what's it like in Maine?
thats in probably the most rural and remote part of maine..if you like deep wilderness you'll like it..its close to baxter state park/ mt katahdin, moosehead lake, and many other maine state parks with mountains, lakes, and moose...however with rural areas come "rural people"

..i personally prefer the coast of maine..unfortunately caribou is a few hours from the coast..but if you're coming to maine then you absolutley have to see the maine coast, especially that northern stretch up where you'll be

it will be winter still in april but porbably sunny with snow just on the high elevations and in the forests..yes they have summer but you will miss most of it.

What is the difference between a Nor'easter and any other storm?

I live in Maine and we are used to our share of storms. But the ones the weather calls "Nor'easter 's" don't look to me to be any different than regular storms. So does anyone know what the difference is? I tried to look it up but couldn't find what I wantedWhat is the difference between a Nor'easter and any other storm?
The term Nor'easter tends to be overused by the media. It should be reserved for the strongest storms that move slowly up the coast and last for 2-3 days, and are accompanied by strong northeast winds and heavy precipitation as well as coastal flooding. What is the difference between a Nor'easter and any other storm?
They track up the east cosat bringing storm winds on the western side of the storm. The winds are from the northeast and so they call them nor'easters. What is the difference between a Nor'easter and any other storm?
The nor'easters track up from down from the north to the east. Then there are also clippers that are like Alberta and the Colorado. These are commonly ones that goes diagonally.

Where is it better to live maine or IL?

Me and my husband are looking to move so he can further his education. So far he has an interview in portland, maine and downers grove, il. Now my questions are first are these communities that are well diverse and open to seeing interracial couples (I'm white- he's black). Second how is the job market. I will have my BS in applied science, CNA license, and am currently working as assistant manager in fast food. Will I be able to find a good job to support us through his schooling? How is the weather in both. I know it snows in Maine, is it worse than WV (my current location). I have no idea about IL. Any and all information about both will be greatly appreciated. I'm going to DC and Maine .. what to pack?

im staying in maine for like 3 nights and dc for 3 nights..

i have no idea what to pack! does anyone no what the weather is usually like in the summer in both areas?

and other info would be very helpful!!!I'm going to DC and Maine .. what to pack?
The URL's below has the weather forecast for both. Good luck!
Sorry you did not state the month that you will be traveling to Washington, DC and Maine.

Suggest you go to the weather site below and find out the average temperatures, highs and lows for the time frame you will be traveling and then pack accordingly.

This is my help from Washington, D.C. United States of America.

Please pick an answer as the best answer, even if it is not mine.I'm going to DC and Maine .. what to pack?
It's been a super wet summer so far in Maine. I mean, it's like the fourth wettest month EVER recorded in Maine (or something like that.) It's been raining for three weeks, almost non-stop. SO rain gear, and a mix or t-shirt shorts and long sleeve/pants and sweatshirts. And comfy shoes and probably a bathing suit.

DC? Well been there three times, and it was either very wet or very hot and humid. Yech. Comfy shoes good for walking in are a plus. And a bag to put things in. Like water bottles and stuff.

Oh yeah, and the best weather site for Maine is http://nws.noaa.gov/
just letting you know, around this time of the year, its CRAZY humid and hot in D.C. bring shorts and t-shirts. bring a lot of water, and maybe a hand towel for all your sweat! believe me, it helped me out quite a bit! and for maine, for the day time, its usually a little chilly, and for the night. try some sweatshirts and pants.I'm going to DC and Maine .. what to pack?
That is so weird, I just spent two weeks in Maine then moved to DC for the summer...

    Anyway -

What part of Maine? I was in the southern part close to New Hampshire and it was chilly but nice. Maybe 70s, but there were hotter days too. Bring shorts and some pants, maybe a sweater for cool nights. And a swimsuit!

DC is wicked hot. Tanks, shorts, and flip flops. SO HOT. Sunglasses. Maybe a hat. Good pair of walking shoes.
I don't know about Maine, but I can tell you D.C is pretty hot in the summer time. I recommend you pack shorts and t-shirts, preferably as white as possible, because white will attract less heat.

    Have fun, and enjoy D.C!

I am storing a set of wood venerred, Ludwig drums in my garage this winter. The temperature in this part of Maine can get as low as -40 deg.F. What preperations should I do to avoid any damage?DRUM KIT STORAGE IN COLD WEATHER?
Wow. First of all, loosen the skins or they will split open. Wrap the drums in a nice warm blanket and if possible, keep away from the walls because that is where the humidity hangs around.

Why has it been so rainy in the northeast?

This is day 9 of straight rain. I'm living in Maine and we still, according to the weather forecast, have 10 more days at least as far as they can predict, of rain. What's causing the mess? A hurricane? Why has it been so rainy in the northeast?
same thing over hear in boise ID but yours is because of a jet streem from england then to egypt then to the hot southern atlantic ocean and that is where the magic happens, it is so hot over there there is recerd highs in mexico, florda, and the caribbean that the water evaperaits at a high rate and gets stored in the clouds until the jet streem gets to NY and Main. same thing over hear in the north west but different jet streem and ocean. What's up with the weather!?

The weather has been so messed up. I live in Maine which is suppose to be cold but it's been raining in what's suppose to be one of the coldest months. On Monday the weather was so wacked. It took turns raining, snowing, hailing, sleeting, mixed, then it was sunny. It kept doing that on %26amp;off. Global warming?!What's up with the weather!?
Omg I live in Maine too xD lol that was off topic but seriously that was janked wasn't it?
I agree! here in New York it's snowing, and yesterday is was snowing too, except it kept on stopping and snowing. Like for 5 minutes it would stop snowing, and then it would start snowing again. . . But at least school's canceled here. I don't think it's Global Warming though. What's up with the weather!?
It isn't global warming, it's the jet stream taking a southerly course for most of the winter. In the south central US the winter has been much colder than normal, and much more snow than normal. We'll probably end up with our snowiest winter ever!
ikr, it's been like that too...down here in NJ

we have no school today and we had an early dismissal yesterday. the snow is like, have my height now, AND IT'S ONLY 8!! who knows what will happen in the end of the day!!What's up with the weather!?
I think that it's Global Warming and about half of it is from Earth's natural climate. I live in FL and over here its freakin cold as hell. Right now it's about 30 degrees.
it's not global warming , it's termed Climate Change now

Yes Global Warming. It's pretty sad that a lot of people are still in denial about it.
yea for sure .. i think it is global warming

Vacation spots in Maine, New Hampshire?

I am looking for a place to go for a one week vacation with my husband and 2 and a half year old girl this summer. We really like the idea of a cottage on a lake but we would also like to have somewhere to go indoors with a toddler if the weather is no good. Last year, it rained almost all week and we were in the middle of nowhere! Any links to a website would be great too. Thanks!Vacation spots in Maine, New Hampshire?
There are a lot of places that come to mind when thinking about those two states. They are both beautiful, and make perfect getaway locations. For me to pick the 'best' spot is almost impossible. There is just too many, and it depends a lot on what type of environment you like - somewhere secluded and quiet, or somewhere with a lot of people and lots of activity going on, or somewhere in between? I can provide a few links, and maybe that will help you to decide? Either way, have a great vacation wherever you decide to go!

Come on up to Conway, New Hampshire! We've got it all! The town is quaint, safe and friendly. Our nights are rarely too hot in the summer and days offer lakes to swim in, and lots to do! Take a peek at www.mtwashingtonvalley.org to see our chamber of commerce website. There is much to do here. If you call the folks over at Conway Lakeside Cottages (see link below). This is a quaint place. It's outside of town and right on Conway Lake. Peace and quiet with room for little feet to run outside. You're about 15 mins out of town. Town is an easy drive. The road you're on is quite too which is nice. I drive past this place every day and always wish I was a tourist so I could stay there for week!

Hope to see you round town this summer!
in maine you can choose between staying on the coast or staying in the mountains...since it'll be summer i recommend the coast, for a beach vacation southern maine including york, oqunquit or old orchard beach are very popular--kids love the boardwalk at old orchard beach with all its games and food(adults do too)....for a more "rugged" vacation go up to bar harbor and acadia national park--the coast here is more rocky and rugged compared to southern maines sandy beaches; you can do whale watches, tour the national park, explore the town of bar harbor,etc.. i would use craigslist for vacation rentals

When is the best time to visit New England?

My family and I are planning a visit to New England, Maine and New Hampshire to be exact. We were wondering when would be the best time to go? What is the weather like during the year, when is it the most snow, when is it the most rain, when is it the hottest, etc. When is the best time to visit New England?
here are some sites that might help.

the peak is often in october but it varies from year to year and from state to state. new hampshire and vermont are my favorite states to visit at that time.

be prepared for crowds and book your travel early. When is the best time to visit New England?
You can get information on climate from any number of weather sites, just Google it. New England covers a huge area from coastal to mountain, cities to farmland. I have visited in spring and fall (autumn) and am staggered by the sheer beauty and diversity of the area. I suppose a great deal depends on whether you want to shop (Boston) or sight see, adventure or pure relaxation. New England has the lot. I have explored the forest areas of Vermont (including a tour of Ben and Jerry's ice cream factory) and the historic covered bridges of Connecticut and Vermont as well as the Maine coastline and sea side towns and villages. There are also the historic areas of Massachusetts including Salem famous for its witch trials. I suppose New England is most renowned for the autumnal experience of the "Fall". Unfortunately this is when most folk go and some are disappointed as the fall is hard to predict within a period of a month to six weeks. We even stayed in the Vermont house once owned by Rudyard Kipling, where he wrote The Jungle Book and other works, that is available through The Landmark Trust for short and week hires and is a memorable experience. www.landmarktrust.org.uk. Get online and check out the options according to your own preferences. I am sure you will not be disappointed. When is the best time to visit New England?
A good time to come is May. The beaches are opening but not much tourism is coming yet. Also school is still in session so the culture towns such as Portsmouth or North Conway will be less crowded. Fall is also nice with the foliage but it can be hard to predict when the best foliage will be as it usually varies year to year. All in all its a great place anytime except between Dec. and Mar. due to the snowy weather. Most of the fun things to do in New England are outdoors and stay closed from Nov. to Apr.
The best time to visit New England is in the fall. The daytime temperature is usually in the 60's and the colors on the trees are amazing. There would be snow on the ground from around late November to mid April, sometimes earlier or later. It tends to rain a lot in March and April. The hottest month is July or August.

  • My dad claims that people from Massachusetts did not come to the aid of the country during the war of 1812?

He claims they refused to let their militia serve outside boston and that Maine was mainly conquered by Britain through Mainer cowardice and that's the reason for the bad weather in New England. Is this true?My dad claims that people from Massachusetts did not come to the aid of the country during the war of 1812?
So, the heavens have ever frowned on the selfishness of New Englanders, eh?

Well, if you believe in a world governed by the direct intervention of various gods and demons and of course an active place for magic, then that is the kind of tale that would certainly invoke retribution.

However, it is not true that that the War of 1812 was entirely ignored by New Englanders. First, one of the reasons for the war was protection of American shipping and seamen - "freedom of the seas" - from British predations. This was the consequence of Britain declaring that neutrality of shipping was not to be respected during the latter stages of her long war against Napoleon. This was an especially important matter to New Englanders.

American naval strength during the war was expressed mainly by the nation's small but respected fleet of "frigates," smaller warships armed with between 32 and 44 cannon. These strongly-built vessels were contructed in different ports around the U.S., including Salem, Massachussetts. New Englanders were killed in the dozens when the Essex, out of Salem, was trapped by British warships in the neutral port of Valparaiso, and in violation of the laws of neutrality was battered to bits by the Brits. My dad claims that people from Massachusetts did not come to the aid of the country during the war of 1812?
Contrary to public perception, there wasn't an overture, it was a plot inspired by communists. My dad claims that people from Massachusetts did not come to the aid of the country during the war of 1812?
He's right! The people of New England and the Acadians(New brunswick, PEI, Nova Scotia), were very friendly to each other. I remember reading once that the gov of Mass once said something like "If the good people of Nova Scotia promise not to bare arms against me, I shall not bare arms against them." There was even a story that the town of Calais, Maine had no gun powder for it 4th of July celebration, and the British fort at St. Stephen, New Brunswick gave the town some from their own supply!

As to the militia, yes that is true. The militia did not have to fight outside of the American lands. They were created to protect, not for offensive attacks. Many actually invoked this right in the ill fated attack on Queenston heights(Niagara Falls, Ontario). After watching the first wave of "Regular" troops get slaughtered by General Brock's British and Native Indians led by Joseph Brant, someone in the militia remembered that they didn't have to fight on foreign soil and so they sat safely on the other side of the river, and watched the butchery. Best seats in the house though!

How far is the drive from Portsmouth to Boston?

We are considering a duty station in Portsmouth, Maine. We've heard there's a lot to do in Boston (obviously). Is there anything we should know about the area? We are from Houston (so obviously the weather will be different), but what else should we expect? Advice? What are some must-sees of the area? What's the best place to live up there - if you enjoy the country? How far is the drive from Portsmouth to Boston?
    MacCuriou... is quite correct.

It is somewhat peculiar that none of the prior Answerers remarked how the old downtown of Portsmouth is quite interesting in its own right, a historic former fishing port that became somewhat decayed but was "discovered" in the 6os and 70s by yuppies and gays who preserved and rehabbed the (mostly brick, colonial architecture) buildings into living areas, fine restaurants, shops, galleries, entertainment places, a museum, etc., etc. so that downtown Portsmouth is a bit of a destination place. Similarly charmingly preserved towns and small cities line the coastline between Boston and Portland and you may find that to be one of the most enjoyable things of your stay (plus of course the fresh caught lobster, but on the other hand be advised that Gulf of Maine shrimp are smaller, less firm and stronger flavored than Gulf of Mexico shrimp so they are not as good eaten plain boiled with cocktail saauce or butter, but are better in shrimp spreads, tapinades and for Scandinavian shrimp recipes).

Being that Portsmouth is in the Portland to Richmond (VA) megalopolis I have no idea what ShouldBeW... means by stating that by your coming from a big city (Houston) you might have culture shock. Perhaps politically, changing from deep red Texas to pure blue New England.

Finally, Christoph...Griffen is partially incorrect vis a vis sales taxes. NH has a 7% tax but it is only on restaurant meals and take-out prepared foods. And I thought that food and clothes were exempt in ME (as they are in MA).
The Naval station there is great. The drive is about 60ish miles and 1 hour long.

Go to York Beach in the summer - its beautiful there. Go to the factory outlet stores in kittery. You are moving to a great place!

You are not going to be far from Portland, home of the SeaDogs (baseball). The Cumberland County Civic Center is in downtown Portland.

You can also go to the Brunswick NAS in Brunswick, ME before it closes. It was on the BRAC list to be closed :( .

There is 5% tax on everything purchased in Maine. No sales tax in New Hampshire. How far is the drive from Portsmouth to Boston?
It is actually Portsmouth, New Hampshire which is just over the bridge from Kittery, Maine. The drive is about 70 miles and if traffic is good should take a little over an hour. If you goto Boston frequently, you may want to take the commuter rail from Newburyport or Salem. The rail is faster if the traffic is heavy.

Boston is a nice city with a lot of history. Lots of young adults that are career oriented. There are a lot of bars and Irish themes.

Portsmouth is a nice little city with great nightlife and extremely safe.

    Have fun.
Ok so we got you goin to portsmouth,NH to the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard (imguessing) In Kittery, ME makes sense i know. Ok so Kittery has tons of shopping and outlets. Downtown Portsmouth has shops that you cant find other places. Lots of resturanmts and history. Gilieys is an awsome place if u like hot dogs and fires. Your not far from other things as well, Skiing (great fun) or snow boarding, the lakes region in NH is about 1.5 hours Portland, ME is about an hour north. There are cruises out of Portsmouth that go to islnads off the coast, and Boston is iusually with not a lot of traffic and Hour, everyone who it is taking 1.5 is wither in the slow lane or go the long way. You can get the subway from Revere into boston which lessens the amout you pay because of the Bridge Toll. The beaches are also a great thing to see. Hampton Beach in NH which is south of portsmouth is great, very livley in the summer. Portsmouth is a great city so is Kittery. Yes climate is a lot differnt. Warm weather tweo weeks ago to 5 degrees this morning. So, and everhtintg covered in ice.

if you move up here i hope you enjoy yourslef

o and our accent, youll get use toHow far is the drive from Portsmouth to Boston?
Portsmouth should take you about an hour an a half out of the city. If you're going to be living up there, it's a nice town. If you are from a big city it will be a culture shock perhaps. But Boston is full of history and you'll be right in the heart of that great New England feel. Come for a visit before making any decisions!
roughly 2 hours... Portsmouth is BEAUTIFULL.... Yes COLD but georgeous

Where to go for very relaxing holiday without British masses?

We want to go away for a fortnight in late Sept / early Oct. The primary aim is to wind down, so it would be great to be able to swim every day, lie out in sunshine, read novels, maybe walk in pretty scenery or see wildlife. Good snorkelling, or availability of spa treatments would be a definite bonus.

We've been to the Maldives several times and liked it there a lot. Also liked Bali, Canadian Rockies, Sweden, Maine, South Africa, Caribbean. The essentials are a comfy bed, vegetarian options on the menu, and peace and quiet. We tend to dislike anywhere we find large amounts of Brits, especially places that are famed for their nightlife, eg we hated Malia in Crete, Bugibba in Malta, Cavos in Corfu. Would also avoid bad weather or political instability.

We like to either go somewhere luxurious (but at a bargain price, due to a late deal or good exchange rate) or somewhere that is not a corporate resort (eg an eco-lodge or local boutique hotel).

Any inspiring ideas?Where to go for very relaxing holiday without British masses?

I love going on spa holidays. You can try out Mandala Spa and Villas, the Farm at San Benito in Batangas, and check out -http://www.eden-island.com/ (Eden Island Resort and Spa, its located in ****** Occidental) you will have great spa retreats, not so many BRITS and at a bargain price. Google them. They are all located in the Philippines. Safe and one of the best in the world its just that promotion is mostly by word of mouth not by advertising.
