Are schools in the cold, snowy, Northern U.S. closed frequently due to snow/icy weather conditions?

I live in Maryland, and the schools here close when there is like a drop of snow. One timne the schools closed simply because snow was predicted, and it never came! This is ridiculous. My question: How do the schools in the cold, snowy states, like Maine, Washington, and Colorado handle snow storms? If they are like Maryland, they would be closed just about everyday in the winter!!!Are schools in the cold, snowy, Northern U.S. closed frequently due to snow/icy weather conditions?
Actually, here in the states where we really DO get tons of snow the schools almost NEVER close! UT, WY, ID %26amp; MT, forget it. We have school everyday no matter what. I should know, I teach at a high school. One morning during a snow storm it took me 2 hours to get to work, (usually a 35 min. drive) but they didn't close school even for that blizzard!

Last week the principal came on the intercom numerous times to warn about the freezing rain we were having and to drive carefully on the way home. Sport games were canceled and the roads were sheets of ice the next morning. There were over 250 slid offs and accidents on the freeways in Northern UT. But did they close school? NO!

So - point being, here where we get real snow we just plow through it. I can't get over NV where they had a freak snow storm that dropped a fraction of an ice and they had to close the airport as well as the schools. They don't have snow removal equipment so the airport had to wait for the snow to melt before planes could take off! yes and so are shops, banks etc.Are schools in the cold, snowy, Northern U.S. closed frequently due to snow/icy weather conditions?
I live in Portland Oregon.

They closed the schools hella long during christmastime. We had 2-3 inches of snow fall starting in the morning yesterday. Oddly enough they didnt close schools. I think because the temp got up to 40 and they knew it would melt.
