How far is the drive from Portsmouth to Boston?

We are considering a duty station in Portsmouth, Maine. We've heard there's a lot to do in Boston (obviously). Is there anything we should know about the area? We are from Houston (so obviously the weather will be different), but what else should we expect? Advice? What are some must-sees of the area? What's the best place to live up there - if you enjoy the country? How far is the drive from Portsmouth to Boston?
MacCuriou... is quite correct.

It is somewhat peculiar that none of the prior Answerers remarked how the old downtown of Portsmouth is quite interesting in its own right, a historic former fishing port that became somewhat decayed but was "discovered" in the 6os and 70s by yuppies and gays who preserved and rehabbed the (mostly brick, colonial architecture) buildings into living areas, fine restaurants, shops, galleries, entertainment places, a museum, etc., etc. so that downtown Portsmouth is a bit of a destination place. Similarly charmingly preserved towns and small cities line the coastline between Boston and Portland and you may find that to be one of the most enjoyable things of your stay (plus of course the fresh caught lobster, but on the other hand be advised that Gulf of Maine shrimp are smaller, less firm and stronger flavored than Gulf of Mexico shrimp so they are not as good eaten plain boiled with cocktail saauce or butter, but are better in shrimp spreads, tapinades and for Scandinavian shrimp recipes).

Being that Portsmouth is in the Portland to Richmond (VA) megalopolis I have no idea what ShouldBeW... means by stating that by your coming from a big city (Houston) you might have culture shock. Perhaps politically, changing from deep red Texas to pure blue New England.

Finally, Christoph...Griffen is partially incorrect vis a vis sales taxes. NH has a 7% tax but it is only on restaurant meals and take-out prepared foods. And I thought that food and clothes were exempt in ME (as they are in MA).
The Naval station there is great. The drive is about 60ish miles and 1 hour long.

Go to York Beach in the summer - its beautiful there. Go to the factory outlet stores in kittery. You are moving to a great place!

You are not going to be far from Portland, home of the SeaDogs (baseball). The Cumberland County Civic Center is in downtown Portland.

You can also go to the Brunswick NAS in Brunswick, ME before it closes. It was on the BRAC list to be closed :( .

There is 5% tax on everything purchased in Maine. No sales tax in New Hampshire. How far is the drive from Portsmouth to Boston?
It is actually Portsmouth, New Hampshire which is just over the bridge from Kittery, Maine. The drive is about 70 miles and if traffic is good should take a little over an hour. If you goto Boston frequently, you may want to take the commuter rail from Newburyport or Salem. The rail is faster if the traffic is heavy.

Boston is a nice city with a lot of history. Lots of young adults that are career oriented. There are a lot of bars and Irish themes.

Portsmouth is a nice little city with great nightlife and extremely safe.

Have fun.
Ok so we got you goin to portsmouth,NH to the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard (imguessing) In Kittery, ME makes sense i know. Ok so Kittery has tons of shopping and outlets. Downtown Portsmouth has shops that you cant find other places. Lots of resturanmts and history. Gilieys is an awsome place if u like hot dogs and fires. Your not far from other things as well, Skiing (great fun) or snow boarding, the lakes region in NH is about 1.5 hours Portland, ME is about an hour north. There are cruises out of Portsmouth that go to islnads off the coast, and Boston is iusually with not a lot of traffic and Hour, everyone who it is taking 1.5 is wither in the slow lane or go the long way. You can get the subway from Revere into boston which lessens the amout you pay because of the Bridge Toll. The beaches are also a great thing to see. Hampton Beach in NH which is south of portsmouth is great, very livley in the summer. Portsmouth is a great city so is Kittery. Yes climate is a lot differnt. Warm weather tweo weeks ago to 5 degrees this morning. So, and everhtintg covered in ice.

if you move up here i hope you enjoy yourslef

o and our accent, youll get use toHow far is the drive from Portsmouth to Boston?
Portsmouth should take you about an hour an a half out of the city. If you're going to be living up there, it's a nice town. If you are from a big city it will be a culture shock perhaps. But Boston is full of history and you'll be right in the heart of that great New England feel. Come for a visit before making any decisions!
roughly 2 hours... Portsmouth is BEAUTIFULL.... Yes COLD but georgeous
