Suggestions for an East Coast road trip?

Hi all :) some friends of mine and myself are planning on taking a road trip through the east coast this summer. We're thinking sometime in June I believe. We are starting from Michigan and ending in Maine. On the way there we would like to go through Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and then finally to Maine. And on the way home, we would like to go through Vermont and New York.

We are planning on camping the majority of the trip, which is why we waited until mid June or so, so the weather is hopefully up to par for camping.

I'm curious if anyone has any suggestions? Maybe good campgrounds, or when weather is best, or great places to visit in those areas? Anything at all really would be helpful, as I know nothing about the east coast. We are only making this a week or so trip, so we don't have too much time to spend everywhere. Maine is our focus, so we will spend the most time there.

Thanks for any advice or any information at all. It all helps!!Suggestions for an East Coast road trip?
These are in order along your route. Gillinder Glass factory, Port Jervis NY - not impressive but if you want to stretch your legs..., Mark Twain House, Hartford CT - I haven't been there but it looks like a good stop. I've stayed at the Jellystone campground in Sturbirdge MA - it was fine. Higgins Armory Museum, Worcester MA - pretty cool - suits of armor, etc.

Salisbury Beach in Mass, Hampton Beach in NH and Old Orchard Beach in Maine are all great honky tonk towns full of ocean-side bars, restaurants and arcades. York Beach in Maine is quieter but still busy. There are plenty of good campgrounds in OOB. I recommend Bayley's. The ocean will be very cold in June. The tourist season doesn't start till schools get out end of June. The weather may be chilly to hot, can't predict. Portland is a good size city with lots of restaurants and bars in the Old Port section.

Camping in Vermont at state parks is always good. Close to your route will be Silver Lake State Park in Barnard, Lake Bomoseen State Park in Castleton and Half Moon Pond State Park in Hubbardton and Lake St Catherine State Park in Poultney - all good. There is one private campground on Bomoseen that should be avoided. I can't remember its name. In VT you could drive up Mount Ascutney near Windsor or take the chairlift up Killington near Rutland.

There are a couple of good campgrounds in Lake George NY. Lake George is beautiful and pretty laid back compared to OOB and Hampton. There's an amusement park nearby, The Great Escape.

Check out the baseball hall of fame in Cooperstown NY or, if its a hot day, Howe Caverns - cool. Campgrounds are few and far between out this way. Go to the Dinosaur Barbeque in Syracuse or Rochester - good food and atmosphere. You must go to Niagara Falls. Bring your passports because the Canada side is where it all is. Also bring your wallets because restaurants are very expensive at the falls. Or just don't eat there. It gets cheaper imediately outside the city. Take the Maid of the Mist - its only about eight bucks but well worth it.

Drive through Canada's wine country and you're on your own back to Michigan.Suggestions for an East Coast road trip?
that sounds like fun but if you only have a week or so then skip OH, PA, and MA and drive right to Maine or NH...you'll be glad you did..if you go right to maine you can camp one night on the ocean watching seals and the next night in the mountains watching moose..I actually lived in OH, NY and now Maine and camped in all 3 of those states-- i can tell you that maine would be the most dramatic of all those placesSuggestions for an East Coast road trip?
you can't get to maine without going through ny the way you have it laid out. i have seen this question before.
Why not check out the National Parks? Here's a link:http://www.nps.gov/index.htm
