I'm going on a school exchange to America?

Hey, i'm from England btw. Well right now it's the summer holidays, but in september when we go back, i'll be in year 9. And i think the month we go to America is either May or June. We're there for either 5 or 6 nights, and we spend a couple of days at a American school, some days visiting historic places and one of the days, depending on the weather we're supposed to be going on a boat ride haha.

I just had a few questions to anyone who's been on an exchange, or lives in America?

1. If i'm in year 9, what grade will i be in? (just curious)

2. What will the weather be like? So i know what sort of clothes to bring? (The place i'm going to is in Maine, which i think is located near Boston)

3. What are the schools like? What lessons do you do the most? Do you wear a uniform in schools in that area?

4. If you live in/near Maine, what are the houses like? Big/small?

5. And one last question, does this part of America have any strict rules on clothing? Or does it depend on the parents of the house. Because when it's hot weather, i wear vest tops and they are low cut. Would this be unacceptable?

If you could answer as many questions as you can, that'd be great:) Points for best answer:)I'm going on a school exchange to America?
1. you'll have to transfer all your records and they will have to see your GPA and where abouts your grades lie, because in america they put you into grades depending on your abilities. but most people of your age group are usually in 8th grade (13 to 14 yrs old - which is how old year 9s range from), which is the last grade of middle school before you go onto high school. in england, they're a few steps ahead of america in terms of curriculum/syllabus stuff, because they start school at an earlier age than america, so you (supposing that you are 13) would be learning at the same level/ability as a 14 - 15 year old in america!

2. maine isn't too far away from boston, but its the furthest state up north in america. so you'll be in more over canadian weather conditions. during september/fall season, central maine gets to around highest 21 degrees centigrade (70 deg fahrenheit) and gets to around lowest 6 degrees centigrade (42 deg fahrenheit), so around the same temperatures as england in autumn (fall), but obviously depending on where you live in england too, the temperature varies. it usually gets really windy too up in maine at that time, so make sure you bring enough clothes to wrap up warm in, but there will be some sunny days too, so take sunscreen as well!

3. social life in most american schools are vital. so making friends and falling into the right cliques and friendship groups are as important as the learning and studying itself - just bare that in mind and good luck (they're not afraid to start anything whereas in england, public schools tend to be a little stricter on bullying, anti-social behaviour etc). as for their school hours, they start a little earlier than england do (around half an hour earlier or something) and finish a bit later too, from half an hour to 3 quarters of an hour later. and public middle schools don't wear uniform, whereas private do.. but going for 6 nights isn't worth all the uniform hassle anyway, and the school should let you off for that.

4. Maine is a pretty well developed, wealthy state compared to most of the other states in the United States.. not as wealthy as California, Florida, Nevada, Arizona etc, but the average house prices is around $200,000 (拢122,226) but for us, we can only buy reasonably small, but comfortable-state-of-living houses for that money whereas you can get a pretty decent, wealthy looking sized house for that (because of the economy is stronger in england etc). so compared to england, yes. houses will be big in maine.

5. Maine is a fairly strict foreclosure and liability state. but for clothing, around the house you can obviously wear what you want.. but for outgoing i'd wrap up just in case, plus as i said, in september it wont be all that hot anyway. there aren't many strict policies in maine relative to what you wear and stuff, but obviously, just like england, you can only go so far to what is seen as acceptable, and exposure of too much flesh may cause a few issues here and there.

but in general, just go out there and enjoy yourself :-) you're there for less than a week and i highly doubt that you will have any of this to worry about, just get yourself in the right place at school, wear some decent, suitable clothes for the weather and enjoy something different :-) america's a lot more exciting than england will ever be.. oh, and try out the american cuisine; american food is the best!I'm going on a school exchange to America?
1. I'm sure year 9 refers to 9th grade, which means you'll be a Freshman in high school.
2. Well May and June is early spring, so sometimes it's cold and sometimes it's hot, you can never tell what the weather will be like.
3. Schools can be very different. Americans have really short lunch periods--mine was 25 minutes. As for lessons and uniforms, it really depends on the school, we usually have the same classes everyday for 45 to 50 minutes. As for uniforms, public schools usually don't have them whereas private schools do.
4.I don't live near maine, but it all depends if it's a suburb or a downtown area. I've heard that American houses area a lot bigger than England's, but I'm not sure.
5.No strict rules in America about clothing, just that you have some on--lol. Really just depends on what the parents think is okay. Low cut=America, so your vest tops will be fine. You can wear anything you want in America.

Have an awesome time because America is really fun!
