Only two instances of record snowfall after 2000. Weather patterns here have remained pretty much the same with slight shifts in either direction all my life.If Global Warming were true, would we expect to see more record snowfalls as the ice melts?
What you will see is longer summers and shorter winters characterized by more abrupt and deeper southward dips in the jet stream along the temperate latitudes in some places and more northern amplitudes in others. Generally speaking cold fronts and low pressure areas are associated with these gyrations of the jet stream. Warmer south to north air flows over warmer ocean water is associated with an evermore saturated air masses. When dense cold air behind a cold front gets overrun by a massively saturated warm air mass the result is a wet snowfall or rainstorm. Depending on how fast the front is moving will determine how long the snow or rain will fall. A slow moving or stationary front, given a long lasting northerly flow of warm moist air will drop massive amounts of snow or rain....sometimes known as a 'perfect storm'. Melting ice, as it thermally expands will of course take up more room in the ocean basins making X more square miles of ocean to evaporate moisture into the atmosphere. So far, so good! What we do know is that the ice IS melting, and the temperature of the oceans are warmer. While the the rise isn't spectacular in itself it still amounts to air masses that can hold X amount more moisture so the thesis that heavier snowfalls can be expected is simply good physics. Of course the jet stream does gyrate up and down as it progresses in a west to east direction. Should the eastern United States see the jet stream loop way north they'll see almost no snow in some seasons while western Europe will experience a really cold, though shorter winter. Of course that's the Cliff Notes version of how these things work, but the takeaway is that even a few degrees rise in world temperatures WILL extend or shorten established climate patterns. A shorter or more massive monsoon season in India would mean goodbye India as far as it's established agriculture is concerned...big bummer for them. Should we worry? I'd say so!
