Each state will have it's problems and their benefits. You will have to look more locally to answer your question. I suggest finding the city that best suites your socioeconomic needs.

Once you find the best state for your family socially and economically, then you can look more specifically at the communities that surround the area.

California has very mild weather in the central valley. The North can be wet and cold. The coast is cool year around. The sierras are cold and snowy in the winter. The south can get really hot during the summer. Also I've lived here almost 30 years, never seen a fire outside my door, had anything fall off the shelf because of an earthquake, or experienced a drive-by. As far as the crime, of course you will hear more about crime from California since it's one of the largest states in the country. With that said the smaller states, New Jersey, Maine, Connecticut, etc. will have lower crime rates.

If you generalize each of the states you will miss out on some bright spots of each.

I suggest taking a road trip and experiencing each of the cities if your family has the option of actually picking which location to relocate to.
DONT EVEN LOOK AT CALIFORNIA!!!! thats like one of the worst states to live in. Even though its nice to live in but i hear some scientific facts about that state. One day a metor is going to hit there and its going to be huge or if any meteor hits somewhere on earth most likely it will be on california, lots of wild fires, earthquakes and its on the west coast so im afraid there might be an earthquake that will cause a tsunami and wipe it out..and they also say that california one day is going to evaporate someday or drift apart or something. I was planning to move there but...hehe..no.What Is The Safest State To Live In? : ]]?
Forbes Safest places

Rank Location

1. Honolulu, Hawaii

2. Boise City, Idaho

3. Santa Fe, N.M.

4. Yakima, Wash.

5. Spokane, Wash.

6. Richland-Kennewick-Pasco, Wash.

7. Medford-Ashland, Ore.

8. Corvallis, Ore.

9. Salem, Ore.

10. Las Cruces, N.M.

There's some city in New Jersey (Sorry, but I forgot the name) and it was officially elected as the city with the lowest crime rate in America. New Jersey barely ever suffers from natural disasters, or really big crimes either. What Is The Safest State To Live In? : ]]?
I live in Maine and I think it is the 2nd best state for low crime rate.
It's definitelty not Florida

Ok, before we even start, I'm just going to say this.

There is NO SUCH thing as the safest place to live in ANYWHERE. You are always going to face crime no matter where you live.

WIth that said, here we go:

To the idiot who talked crap about California (St. CroixsGem), DON'T LISTEN TO HER!! She obviously NEVER even came to California. I'm a California native and all I can say is that I love it here. The only problem with California is that it's one of the most EXPENSIVE states to live in the United States! Job opportunities are non-existent in CA and it's about to get worse! So basically, I DO NOT RECOMMEND that your family moves to California UNLESS your family is obsessed with being miserable.

You will not get shot in school, but again, you will never know. Even the BEST schools (Virginia tech) NEVER expected a student to go crazy and shoot 31 students.

Hurricanes and tornadoes are predictable so you have nothing to worry about. Earthquakes are not, unfortunately.

From your list, I would definitely recommend Maine!

From my list, the best state I would RECOMMEND is North Carolina (Raleigh, North Carolina)

So much beauty, affordable, great weather, fun for everybody!! My aunt lives there with 3 small children and they all LOVE IT there! The link for Raleigh, North Carolina is below.

OK. Based on the following web site, the safest state to live in is New Hampshire (right below Maine and next to Vermont). Maine is number 2 safest, so out of your list Maine is the best. Vermont is number 4 safest. Wisconsin number 10 safest. California is number 13 most dangerous states to live in.

I live in Delaware, its number 12 most dangerous. We are the first state, and the second smallest next to rhode island. DE is only 70 miles long, 12 wide, so small. Even in small DE, there are places that are rough, and areas that are pretty safe. We live right next to small Maryland ranked number 7 most dangerous place to live. Honestly I get more concerned going into Philadelphia PA then I do going to Maryland. Interestingly New York doesn't make the most dangerous list. Typical a the top Nevada (Las Vegas), and Louisiana (Mardi Gras)

When considering a large state like California, there are many areas and some areas will be safer than others.

The hurricane tornado belt runs through the middle of the states so you didn't pick any of those.

You did pick a lot of very cold states, I guess not as cold as Canada but lots of snow.

Problem with Tyler's site, its 3 years old. New Mexico is ranked number 3 on the most dangerous state to live in on my link
