Where is the best place to stay in Maine, and when is the best time to go?

We are planning on going to Maine my boyfriend has been their before but I have not. I just want to know the best place to stay and what time to go, so we get nice weather.Where is the best place to stay in Maine, and when is the best time to go?
I would go to Acadia National park, stay in nearby Bar Harbor, though I would be willing to stay as far as Bangor (it is about 20 miles from the park)
