Traveling from NJ to Maine - help with travel info?

We will be driving to Portland Maine. The weather should be sunny and in the 50's for the highs while we are there. We don't want to travel too far out of that area. What are the must see places? Any tips or suggestions on good, but cheaper end places to eat. We plan to buy some food at the local supermarket, so we wont have to eat out too much. (we have kids ages,3, 9 %26amp; 14)

Any info is appreciated! Thanks!

I work in Portland and I used to read electric meters all in that area. (I know it pretty well. :) If you're looking for sight-seeing places, the Portland Museum of Art is nice or the Longfellow Museum and House is a neat tour to go on. The house is where Longfellow lived and it's pretty spooky looking (just in time for halloween too). Those are both right in the Old Port area of Portland. Plus, the Old Port has tons of stores and shops that are neat to look at.

As far as places to eat, there are plenty of chain restaurants in the area so you'll be familiar with their price range. It also depends on what you consider cheap. Walk around the Old Port area and you'll find everything and anything you want.
