You should be going to shows and meeting breeders and owners and asking these questions. You've clearly only seen pictures on line which is not the right way to pick a breed.
Maine Coons are pretty laid back cats. If your terrier is aggressive or very yappy it would probably greatly annoy a Maine Coon.
When you buy one from a breeder you'll sign a contract that states THE CAT WILL BE KEPT INDOORS. If you don't intend to do this you have no business getting a Maine Coon - or any cat for that matter.
If the house is comfortable in temperature to you, it will be too the cat. Have heat on in the winter and don't let the house get too hot in the summer.
Females average 9-13 pounds full grown.
Maine Coons can come in any colour/pattern - Solids, Bicolour, Tortie, Tabby, etc. Even pointed though this is not approved for showing.
To find breeders http://tica.org/public/breeds/mc/breeder… Better - go to shows and meet breeders and owners http://ticamembers.org/calendar/
In the over 20 years I've volunteered with shelters I've yet to see a Maine Coon come through. If they are surrendered to shelters they're usually quickly snatched up by breed rescues. So Google "Maine Coon breed rescue" and the area you live in to find one.
Longhaired cats should NEVER be brushed - they need to be combed.

edit: also note that 99% of the people that are going to answer this question that say they had or have a Maine Coon DON'T. A lot of people ASSUME their longhaired tabby cats are Maine Coons and even believe the idiotic comment made on the "Cats 101" show that "an M on the forehead means Maine Coon". It DOESN'T - it's simply part of tabby markings that appear on many breeds as well as millions of cats of NO particular breed.Lotsa maine coon questions?
It depends on the cat, as far as behavior goes. I used to have a Maine Coon that absolutely hated other animals and other people, but not all are this way. Many cats love dogs and kids. Introducing the cat to other animals and children as a kitten is a good idea. If you want to ensure a cat with a great temperament, a breeder would be a good way to go. Getting a rescue is a great idea, and one that I recommend, just exercise caution when picking out your companion. Maine Coons can live a very long time, but they can suffer from liver problems, which is how mine died at the age of seventeen. Just make sure to take your cat to the vet regularly, of course:] Maine Coons can be both indoor or outdoor cats, but if your climate is hot and dry I would recommend either keeping your cat mostly indoors or giving it a hair cut in the summer. You should groom your cat regularly, as their fur can get matted if you don't. Maine Coons make great lap cats, if you don't mind the shedding, and they can be very affectionate. Pure bred Maine Coons typically come in tabby colors, mostly browns and blacks and oranges, but they can come in almost every color and pattern. If you want to find good rescue centers of breeders in your area, I suggest the internet:] Good luck!Lotsa maine coon questions?
Maine Coon cats tend to be very affectionate, and tend to be good with other animals, and children. They come in nearly all colors and coat patterns. Males can get up to about 25lb, females tend to be smaller, and usually top out at about 15lb. I suggest getting a rescue or shelter cat, there are LOTS of them, and you can research local ones online. They are some of the lowest maintenance long-haired cats available, and most even like water(much easier to bathe). They are good as indoor, outdoor, and all-terrain(indoor-outdoor) cats. So long as you haven't de-clawed(I never let de-clawed cats outdoors, since they can't climb trees then.)
Most will eat any kind of cat food, and they're great mousers.
:( i missed my ashy.. he was a maine coon cat
mine was very snobbish and introvert to other people. they don't interact that much but they love children because ashy used to play with my niece when my niece was months old.
