It depends on where you are headed. Mountainous areas tend to be a bit cooler than the coast at that time of year and southern Maine, of course, is typically warmer than the northern areas.
When I travel I have found Weather Underground to be really useful. They have a section whereby you can look up historical weather data for a particular area. For instance, go to wunderground.com and type in Portland, ME as your location.
When the current weather date displays you will see a section called Current Conditions. At the bottom of that section is a link for Weather History for This Location. You can go back a number of years and see what the temperature, rainfall, wind, etc. was for any location for a day, week, or month.
Regardless of what you find be sure to bring both warm and cool weather layers. And, since the weather often changes quickly, especially along the coast, don't be fooled by a sunny warm morning - head out prepared!
Have fun! I just started writing about Maine vacation ideas on http://www.great-maine-vacations.com/.What is the September weather like in Maine?
September is Maine鈥檚 best weather month of year 鈥?ocean is warm so costal temperatures are good, less fog, less bugs than other warm months, and the leaves are just getting ready to turn so there may be some early foliage viewing in low wetlands
