My Maine Coon is 14 yrs. old.I've never had a problem with his coat, but now he's all matted.I've been brushing him everyday with a two sided brush. He's matted alot on his belly.I don't want to hurt him.Should I get an under coat remover, mat splitter,or have him shaved?I'd appreciate any help! Thank You!!! : )Maine Coon,14 yrs.Under coat matted due to weather.Never before.Mat splitter or shave?
His coat is "matted due to weather"? No - it's matted because you haven't been grooming him properly. Cats with long hair should NEVER be brushed. Brushes do little to remove the loose hairs of the undercoat and can pull out and break top coat hairs. You should be COMBING his coat which will gently remove the loose hairs of the undercoat and leave the topcoat intact. If the fur's gotten so matted that you can't work the mats out with a comb then you'll have to take him to a groomer experienced with cats and have the mats clipped out. In the future, COMB HIM at least every other day all year long to prevent mats.Maine Coon,14 yrs.Under coat matted due to weather.Never before.Mat splitter or shave?
The shaving will be far easier for him to handle. Your vet techs can do it for you at a lower cost than any groomer can. I'd use them.Maine Coon,14 yrs.Under coat matted due to weather.Never before.Mat splitter or shave?
Shave the belly area. Cat skin is very, very thin even more so on the belly area. Take to groomer or vet %26amp; let them shave that area. There is a really good chance of you injuring cat by de-matting even for seasoned groomers. He might be having a thyroid imbalance also. It happens in older cats %26amp; helps cause the matting %26amp; inability to groom himself.
I have Maine Coons also. And at that age it is sometimes hard to keep the tummy and back legs clean and from matting. I have shaved them down in the spring and let it grow back out during the summer and during the colder months. It makes them happier and me tooo. I have younger ones who I can just take care of the mats myself. And a good time to do the mats is set up an appointment for their check ups and shave tummy and what ever else is matted. Good luck with your baby.
