Maine coon - hot weather?

I have a 10 year old cat. I think he is a maine coon becaus he is really big (15lbs, large frame, not fat) has the lion's mane thing going on, a really bushy tail, and lots of fur growing out of his feet. I am concerned that he may be miserable during the summer because he has so much fur. He is an outside cat and here in the spring and summer it's commonly 90 - over 100 degrees. Should I try to trim his fur or shave him somehow? He is getting to be an old man and I want to make him more comfortable.Maine coon - hot weather?
Yup. Have a groomer cut him down to half an inch. Leave the tail uncut. He'll LOVE you for it. I have mine done twice a year. Less hair up your nose, too. It really perks a cat up to be trimmed like this. And, a thick-coated cat can actually suffer a bit from tactile touch deprivation. Mine just loves it when he can more directly feel my caress against his skin.
you should talk to a groomer about this. Mainecoons are beautiful cats, and if you trim their fur yourself it could turn into a disaster! So consult your local groomer and I'm sure they can make him beautiful!Maine coon - hot weather?
I had a cat like that, but he weighed 18.4 lbs. Whenever it was hot he'd head for the basement and stretch out on the cool cement. Since your cat is outside, I'd make sure he had plenty of water in the shade. He might get really overheated or even sunburned if you shaved him, so I wouldn't do that unless you were willing to keep him inside.
I grew up with Maine Coon cats and they never had any problems with the heat. As was mentioned before, lots of available water and shade and he should be fine. You do have to worry about sunburns if you shave him, so keep that in mind. Personally, I have never seen a cat that looked happy to be shaved and our cats were always embarrassed when they were shaved (although that could have been because they had been hurt).Maine coon - hot weather?
go to a groomer, they will keep his fur looking good and a bit thinner, never shave a cat they can get sunburnt which is painful and in extreme cases kill. also leave plenty of water out in the shade, if he has been allowed outside all his live he will know where the cool spots are and will stretch out there.
Hi,

I had a main coone once. Don鈥檛 trim him. You don鈥檛 have to do that.

You can make sure his hair is brushed so no hold an loose hair is sticking in is fer, but you don鈥檛 have to shave him or keep his hair short.

Nature has built him the way he should be. If he gets hot he will go sit in the shadow or doesn鈥檛 go outside.

(sorry for my poor English but I am from Holland, hope you understand me anyway)
