Alright, my kids live in Waterville, Me (Maine), and I've always had quite a bit of trouble figuring out when school is closed, and what not. I drop them off at school every day, and last week the school was closed because it was snowing. It wasn't snowing at all, but when I called there school, that's what they said. So, my question, how can I know when it's closed from snow, or other weather problems?

Our school text messages our parents when schools closed, maybe you could make a suggestion to them ??

I'm wondering when this will happen. I'm 21 years old. I figure if I set myself up in NYC, boston, maine, florida, or the carribean. Will these areas become underwater or not? And when will this happen.

A city on east coat which has cool climate, a lot of recreational activities, and has median population?
I want to move to new place. I have made up my mind that it will be on east coast. But i don't know which city. Like I said it has to have cold weather, a lot of recreational activities, and has median population. And also keep in mind that I am single, so don't tell me cities where I will be stuck with old people, married couples. Its has to be near ocean.
I was thinking maybe Portland, Maine or Newport, Rhode Island.

i was actually going to suggest portland, maine--thats where i live, moved here 4 years ago and love it...you would love it too, lots of new people from other states so you wont be alone, lots of young active people..for recreation you have the ocean, the best ski resorts in the east (sugarloaf), the best hiking in the east (presidential range and mt washington), the Old Port of portland is very active for music and arts, and i love portlands proximatey to other places--boston is only 90 miles away, nyc is 300 miles away, montreal and quebec city is a 5 hour car drive away and vermont is 3 hours away--plenty of things to keep you busy

I'm reading stories of roads impassbile (still), people getting stuck in airports for 5 days, stores still closed...
I thought Denver was a city that got a lot of snow. Here in southern New England, we consider ourselves to be relative lightweights in the snowfall department (compared to, say, Buffalo or Maine) and we occasionally get a big one (in 1978, for example, there was 50 inches of snow and 10 foot drifts). In 2005 (our last "blizzard" as it is defined by the weather service, heavy snow alone doesn't constitute a blizzard) we got 22 inches of snow with drifts up to around four feet. The city of Providence was cleared out by the late afternoon of the next day.

Where I live, Fort Collins got hammered by the blizzard too and I can tell you that the blizzard paralized Denver because it was the 5th biggest snowstorm EVER to hit the Denver area. Also the meterolgists did not think it was going to be that big of a storm and so were not able to get the word out quickly enough. As of today most roads like I-25, E-470, etc are now passable but I-70 is still shut down. Most of the stores that are currently closed are expected to re-open on Monday with normal schedules. Some transportation services are open like RTD but they are running shortened schedules.

I lived in Mass. during a winter and we had to stock up on food and supplies before a blizzard because we knew we wouldn't get to a store after the snow fall. Ya know what? We had this discussion today. We are from an area not far from Denver. I was very surprised to hear that they were not handling the snowfall. They should be used to it. We live in northern Japan and we've been here for more than 8 years now. We get a lot of snow and we're used to getting snowfall well over what Denver experienced and yet life still goes on. Nothing closes down or stops. Or if it does it is only for a matter of hours, not days. I have no idea what is wrong with Denver but it is strange that a place that should be used to snow suddenly acted like they're in Southern Calif. or something.

Have you been to Denver's airport? It's out there, far from anything that might slow down the wind. You can clear runways but the wind will drift them closed soon after. Some areas used to put up snwofences on the west side of roads and highways to try drop the snow out of harm's way. Also, I think the snowfall accumulated very quickly - and above some number of inches per hour, you will not be able to "keep up".
