im taking a 1980 23ft-O' day project boat and building it into a seaworthy vessel to sail from Maine to England next spring. what should i expect, im a coastal sailor, advance cold water scuba diver, and i've work on boats. my main job is a mechanic for a sheet metal company, tools and knowledge. im strong and i have a will and desire to prove to no-one but me that i can do it. i learning server weather now and going to try to prepare the best i can, weather i make it is up to the weather and a bit of luck. i'll be heading north out of Maine then a straight shot for the Azores islands then back down maybe stop somewhere in the Netherlands before returning to England. the English channel is treacherous.
ok so knowing all that going into it and that ill be 23 and physically and mentally fit drug and alcohol free. what advice can you offer me!
thanks
james- scarb. maineWhat should i bring, know, expect from a 3month journey across the atlantic by my self on a 23ft boat.?
If you're asking this question I don't think you're ready. Before you can leave you have to know how to survive an Atlantic crossing. You need survival training. Water will be one all critical need during your crossing. Communication will be another. Extensive first aid kit will still be another. You also want to premap the standard crossing routes between the US and Europe so that if you get into trouble you can call for help. You're also going to be travelling awfully slow on a 23' Oday. I would actually suggest that you postpone the Atlantic crossing and attempt a trip down the east coast as a practice run. At least that way you can always duck into a harbor or the beach if you get into trouble. Whatever you decide... Good Luck... Hope you survive....What should i bring, know, expect from a 3month journey across the atlantic by my self on a 23ft boat.?
