This should be a very good schedule for both canadians and americans who enjoy the sport,
each division has a very high competetive Level between the teams. New teams are added in both america and canada to expand the game
I took The panthers out becuase they do not have a rich playoff history and moved them to Winnepeg, The arena maybe be a little small, but I'm sure they can renovate it. I put Hamilton, But Toronto has the territorial rights, but Jim Basielle or whoever would move it there would defineatlely have a lot of money to even think about putting a team there. Put a team in Seattle becuase they have an arena made for basketball, but I'm sure it can be made into a NHL Rink, since the move of the super sonics, Seattle has only had a Baseball and football team to support.Moved Islanders Because one Nhl team in the city is enough, not enough fan support. quebec or maine can support beacause of its weather, locations and fans.Hartford maybe a little issue but can be fixed because of the arena, it maybe a little too small, other than that great fans and will be a healthy team
Comment and have any disagreements or agreementsWhat do you guys think of this NHL relocation/new franchise idea?
I would have sent this to either Santa or the Easter Bunny.
Playoff success isn't a determining factor regarding franchise relocation. Economics, arena issues, and lack of ownership are why teams move.
You're effectively proposing moving teams by force. If I own (as an example) a Tim Hortons franchise and the Tim Hortons people (franchisor) want me to relocate it, they would have to pay me the costs involved with this. Who's paying for this?
The NHL Board of Governors (who approve these matters) have already said (in effect) to Jim Balsillie "you have lots of money but we don't trust you and we don't want you as a business partner".
Hamilton would fall under both TOR and BUF's territorial rights, so a Hamilton franchise would, based on precedence, have to pay a fee to both clubs for territorial rights.
With Balsillie out of the running, I am curious as to who these ownership groups are in Seattle, Hamilton, Winnipeg, Quebec/Maine (could you be any less vague) and Hartford and how, exactly, you plan to buy out the ownership groups in Florida, Tampa, New York, and Carolina.
Quebec/Maine: Where in Maine/Quebec? You're talking a US state with one of the smallest populations of any US state, and a province in Canada with the highest tax rates in the country.
Hartford: Failed economically with a declining population; who's building an NHL arena (and who's paying for it?). Boston and New York could claim territorial infringement.
Hamilton: Who's paying to renovate Copps Coliseum (that'll run around $250mm). Tack on millions to pay off TOR and BUF.
If you'll excuse me I have to go to a meeting and my unicorn needs to be fed before I head off.
While we're playing in Fantasyland and ignoring all economic and political realities, I always thought there should be a team up in the territories. They'd lose a ton of money, sure, but it'd be cool to see the Iqaluit Inuit come to town. Also if one team could be a travel team that just plays their games in a rink on their team plane, that would be pretty fun too. If you aren't going to bind yourself to moves that could possibly happen, why not go nuts? What do you guys think of this NHL relocation/new franchise idea?
Wheres the Carolina hurricanes at?? they won a cup in 06 and have been to the cup finals and eastern finals each once.. if anything forget the thrashers or colombus and put in the hurricanes.
Um where did Tampa go? You have no reason to take them away. We just got Stevie Y which will add a whole new fan base. The Panthers may not have been in the playoffs in a while, but they have a HUGE fan base. What do you guys think of this NHL relocation/new franchise idea?
As others have said, on paper it looks really good but economically it's not too sound. We all know it's all about the money.
I like how you think. I hope you are right with all of this! I agree, get the team out of Long Island.
Your focusing to much on the city and not what these teams pull
good example being atlanta, they are one of the LEAST profitable teams in the NHL and consistently dont fill seats
Yet you forget teams like the Florida Panthers, whom are one of the MOST profitable in the league due to endorsements (over 50million dollars a year from just budweiser alone btw)
you are also focusing on how good a team is, and not the loyal fanbase
This is more biased than it is a good "idea"
Seattle - Take it from someone who visits the NW every year, the colorado avalanche/san jose sharks have already taken the hearts of the (very few) hockey fans in oregeon, idaho and washington
Hartford or Maine sounds like a Gary Bettman decision that would be laughed at and critisized for years and years to come
and quit saying renovations to arenas! thats very expensive and would NOT be done by the cheep, greedy owners or a franchise!!
Put Hamilton in the Great Lakes Division since Hamilton is actually on a Great Lake. Since Ottawa is not on the Great Lakes then it can be moved to the Northeastern Division. Take The Rangers and New Jersey out of the Northeastern Division and put them in the Eastern Division. Move Hartford to the Northeastern Division and it all equals out at 5 teams per division. Get rid of Nashville and/or Atlanta and/or Columbus and replace them with the Florida teams. At least they have been somewhat successful.
Very impressive, you put a lot of thought into this. Nice dream. I really like the Great Lakes Division idea.
Detroit is not actually on a Great Lake but it is in the whole system and the water that does run past Detroit is water from the Great Lakes, so we will let Detroit stay in the division.
I agree Expat Mike. Why not expand to Europe and have a European division? We could fight the KHL on their territory and bury them like a Tim Hortons next door to a Coffee Time. The possibilities are endless.
Yeah u do know its a crime for the Isles to move before 2015 or their owner goes to jail but I'm sure u know that and this is for 2016. Another thing u do know the pop. of Maine is 1.2 million and Quebec city is 1.3 million while just Nassau and Suffolk county on Long Island is 2.5 million along with Brooklyn and Queens which are technically on the Island. Also u have 9 teams in Canada, quick note Edmonton which is a team with a very rich history and they just drafted Taylor Hall but the NHL has given them no National TV appearances . While the Isles had two last year after getting Tavares and has 3 this year. So I'm thinking the NHL isn't too big on a lot of Canadian teams as Canadian viewers don't count towards ratings but thanks for doing all that research
